06/12/2026

🚧 City contractor crews will begin rehabilitation work on three bridges in the City of Battle Creek, as part of the 2026 local bridge rehabilitation project, on Monday, June 15. 🚧

The rehabilitation work will include surface treatments and joint repairs for all three bridges over the Kalamazoo River in Battle Creek: Angell Street bridge, South Kendall Street bridge, and McCamly Street South bridge.

Rehabilitation work along these bridges will occur in phases so that only one bridge is closed at a time, over a period of the next three months. Detours will be in place during each bridge closure, as well.

1️⃣ Phase 1 - Angell Street bridge
The first bridge scheduled to undergo rehabilitation work is the Angell Street bridge, as follows:

🚧 Construction/bridge closure dates: Monday, June 15 - Friday, July 3 (with work hours generally from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily)

🚧 Closure area: Angell Street bridge, between Parrish Street and Jackson Street West

🚧 Recommended detour route:
Northbound - Turn right on Lafayette Avenue, turn left on South Kendall Street, turn left on Michigan Avenue, and then turn right to resume northbound on Angell Street
Southbound - Turn left on Michigan Avenue, turn right on South Kendall Street, turn right on Lafayette Avenue, and then turn left to resume southbound on Angell Street

2️⃣ Phase 2 - South Kendall Street bridge and 3️⃣ Phase 3 - McCamly Street South bridge
The remaining two bridges, South Kendall Street and McCamly Street South, will see work and bridge closures after the Independence Day holiday, pending any weather-related delays during work on the Angell Street bridge.

Specific construction and bridge closure dates, as well as detour routes, will be communicated closer to the start of work on each of the remaining two bridges.

ℹ️ These three bridges are receiving rehabilitation work, as a result of biannual bridge inspections. Every other year, the City of Battle Creek hires a consultant to inspect bridges within the city. This requirement results in a report to the city that includes recommendations for bridge-related projects to ensure proper maintenance and longevity of the bridges throughout the city.

The City of Battle Creek then uses the recommended projects to apply for federal funding, through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) Local Bridge Program. These three bridges were recommended for rehabilitation work and were bundled as a single project - the city's 2026 local bridge rehabilitation project.
