Chief Shannon Bagley has announced plans to retire by the end of 2026 after more than 30 years in public safety and law enforcement.

The City of Battle Creek will begin recruiting its next chief of police Sept. 18, with candidate review expected to begin in October. The goal is to select the department's next leader before the end of the year to support a smooth transition.

We thank Chief Bagley for his service to Battle Creek and wish him all the best in retirement.

For 20 years, Crossing Guard Anita Struck helped Battle Creek children get to and from school safely.

Rain, snow, heat or freezing cold, Anita showed up with a smile and looked out for students, families and school staff.

Anita retired at the end of the 2025-26 school year. On Sept. 14, BCPD recognized her two decades of service and the care she brought to the job every day.

Thank you, Anita. We hope retirement treats you well. You’ve certainly earned it. 💙

U.S. and State of Michigan flags are to be lowered to half-staff today, Friday, Sept. 11, by order of both President Donald J. Trump and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, in honor and observance of Patriot Day and the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. 🇺🇸

On Sept. 11, 2001, American Airlines Flight 11 was flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City at 8:46 a.m. United Airlines Flight 175 subsequently was flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center at 9:03 a.m. In Arlington, Virginia, the Pentagon was hit by American Airlines Flight 77 at 9:37 a.m. At 10:03 a.m., United Airlines Flight 93 passengers forced the aircraft down in a field outside of Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after learning of the other attacks. By 10:28 a.m., both towers of the World Trade Center had collapsed.

The terrorist attacks claimed the lives of 2,977 Americans, including first responders who showed bravery in responding to the attacks and aiding the victims. By a joint resolution approved Dec. 18, 2001, the U.S. Congress designated Sept. 11 of each year as Patriot Day.

To lower flags to half-staff, flags should be hoisted first to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The process is reversed before the flag is lowered for the day.

Flags should be returned to full staff Saturday, Sept. 12.

The BCPD Administrative/Records Division will be unable to process licenses to purchase a fi***rm Friday, Sept. 11. Regular hours for processing fi***rm purchase licenses - 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday - will resume Monday, Sept. 14.

Location sharing is handy — until you forget who still has access.

Take a minute to check your phone, apps and shared accounts, and make sure your location is only being shared with people you know and trust.

➡️ The BCPD station lobby will close an hour early, at 4 p.m., today, Friday, Sept. 4.

➡️ Normal business hours for services through the Administrative/Records Division, of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., will resume Tuesday, Sept. 8, following the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 7.

The Battle Creek Police Department Detective Bureau partnered with the Calhoun County Major Crimes Task Force to investigate a missing person report originating with the Marshall Police Department.

As detectives followed investigative leads, they located the missing person deceased within Battle Creek city limits. The Calhoun County Prosecutor's Office has authorized an open murder charge against a 34-year-old Battle Creek man.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Detective Bureau at 269-781-0911 or submit an anonymous tip through Silent Observer at 269-964-3888.

🚨 During August, we investigated reports of 8 stolen vehicles and 13 attempted vehicle thefts in Battle Creek.

All stolen vehicles were recovered.

Most incidents occurred overnight and have primarily involved Kia and Hyundai vehicles.
