Members of the BCU team joined the community to celebrate this Saturday for the Cereal Festival!

This year's brought people together downtown for a full day of activities, live entertainment, local vendors, family-friendly attractions, and, of course, cereal. It was great to see so many residents and visitors enjoying downtown and the festivities.

A project 8 years in the making! Yesterday, partners and community leaders came together to break ground at the site of Riverbend at Capital (formerly Project Blue Light).

The development will bring 80 new units of housing, an on-site childcare center, and new opportunities for families, employers, and our community.

This milestone reflects the power of partnership and a shared commitment to Battle Creek’s future. Together, we’re investing in housing, supporting workforce growth, and building a stronger community for generations to come.

As our President and CEO Joe Sobieralski stated in his remarks: "The work does not end today. In many ways, it begins today. The groundbreaking marks the first chapter of a larger story, one that will continue through future phases, future investments, and future opportunities for the people of Battle Creek."

Battle Creek has received national recognition!

Site Selection Magazine released its annual Governor’s Cup rankings in March and Battle Creek secured a spot as one of the top Tier 3 metro regions in the United States. Out of every community in Michigan, Battle Creek was the only one to make the national list for 2025.

Because of major local investments in jobs, infrastructure, and capital, we ranked #6 in total projects and #5 per capita nationwide for our size. This achievement is a testament to the hard work, resilience, and vision of our local workforce, businesses, leadership, and community. We are proud to see Battle Creek once again being showcased on the national stage!

Yesterday, members of the BCU team joined the team at BCFR-Battle Creek Food Reimagined for the ribbon cutting of Launch 269 , a new flexible office space on the 2nd floor of the Battle Creek Innovation Hub.

The space has been designed specifically as a resource for start-ups, small businesses, remote workers, non-profits, and larger scale companies who are in need of satellite offices or more presence in Battle Creek.

Launch 269 features amenities such as private offices, coworking areas, meeting spaces, an event space, an open cafe/commons area, technological infrastructure, a podcast studio, and workshop rooms.

Those looking for space should visit bcfood.org or send an email to [email protected].

A special thanks to our partners at Battle Creek Chamber for facilitating the ribbon cutting.

On Monday, March 30, U.S. Congressman Bill Huizenga announced that the Battle Creek VA Medical Center would receive almost $14.5 million for modernization and building improvements. This funding is part of the Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) Non-Recurring Maintenance (NRM) program, which funds non-routine infrastructure projects to modernize VA medical facilities and improve patient care. In January, the Trump Administration announced the largest NRM allocation ever at $4.8 billion.

BCU President & CEO Joe Sobieralski remarked, “We are grateful to Rep. Huizenga for his support and advocacy for the Battle Creek VA Medical Center. This is a vital community asset, and we appreciate his continued leadership.”

The NRM program funds one-time maintenance projects for facilities, equipment or infrastructure that are not part of routine, recurring maintenance. These projects include significant maintenance, replacements or upgrades needed to maintain operational capability and advance health care delivery. In Battle Creek, the funding will be used to update the HVAC systems, replace several elevators, install new sump pumps, and improve building safety.

This afternoon, we brought together manufacturing professionals from across Battle Creek to the Battle Creek Innovation Hub for a Manufacturing Economic Roundtable, in partnership with the W.E. Upjohn Institute for Employment Research and Michigan Works Southwest. It was our pleasure to feature Michael Horrigan, President and CEO of the Institute, as our presenter.

From shifting demand and cost pressures to workforce challenges and the growing role of automation, the discussion brought real data together with real-world experience.

It was a great event filled with valuable insights and meaningful dialogue. Thank you to everyone who joined us and to Mike for your knowledge and expertise!
