Last week, the 110th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard in Battle Creek conducted a combat readiness exercise simulating a drone incursion on base. The three-day exercise was part of Northern Strike 26-2, one of the nation’s largest joint reserve readiness exercises, bringing together thousands of service members to train in realistic, complex scenarios.

As part of the exercise, members of Michigan’s Civil Air Patrol flew drones around the installation while 110th Wing personnel trained to identify, assess, and respond to UAS activity. During the exercise, Airmen utilized Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) system which Battle Creek Unlimited is developing as part of its MICH-AIR initiative at the Battle Creek Executive Airport (BTL).

Led by ResilienX of Syracuse, New York, this system integrates radar, ADS-B and Remote ID sensors to provide the airspace awareness and safety infrastructure needed to support remote and autonomous aircraft operations.

The exercise demonstrated another important potential application: using advanced airspace technology to help monitor and manage drone activity in complex environments. It also highlighted what makes MICH-AIR unique: the opportunity to develop advanced aviation infrastructure in partnership with industry, government, and the military, while creating capabilities that can support both commercial innovation and national security.

Battle Creek is building the infrastructure for the future of aviation and that future is already taking flight!

Over the weekend, members of the BCU team were proud to be a part of TRMI, Inc. Tokai Rika Michigan's 40th Anniversary Celebration.

For over 40 years, TRMI has been one of Battle Creek's largest employers and they have continuously invested in their people, their community, and in the future of automotive manufacturing. We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate with the TRMI team, and we are looking forward to what the future holds!

Battle Creek’s Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) system took another big step this week.

On Tuesday, radars were installed atop the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Battle Creek. On Wednesday, we partnered with the Civil Air Patrol’s Battle Creek squadron to map out the radar coverage area and fine-tune the system.

The next step is going through the FAA's Near-Term Approval Process (NTAP), which expedites third-party service provider approvals like Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) services. Once that is complete, remote and autonomous aircraft will be able to operate at the Battle Creek Executive Airport (BTL).

The next step is the FAA’s Near-Term Approval Process (NTAP). Upon final authorization, the Battle Creek Executive Airport (BTL) will be positioned to support commercial remote and autonomous aircraft operations.

Big thanks to the Civil Air Patrol and Echodyne teams for their help.

Stay tuned as we continue building the infrastructure that will enable the future of flight and for further updates on MICH-AIR.

We hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend! Members of the Battle Creek Unlimited team enjoyed attending this year's Battle Creek Field of Flight Air Show & Balloon Festival. While the weather brought a few challenges, the pilots delivered an incredible performance and helped make it yet another memorable celebration for our community.

Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, performers, and everyone who helped make this year's festival a success.

Another major milestone for MICH-AIR!

This week, our Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) system took another step toward becoming operational with the installation of Remote ID and ADS-B sensors on top of the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Battle Creek and at Western Michigan University's College of Aviation.

The FCC licenses for our radars were approved on Monday, clearing the way for us to mount the radar panels on the DoubleTree next month. Once all hardware is in place, we will partner with the Civil Air Patrol to map the radar coverage area. After that, we will move straight into the FAA’s NTAP process.

This project is positioning Battle Creek as one of the nation's emerging hubs for advanced air mobility, autonomous aviation, and drone innovation.

A special thank you to Shail Patel of ResilienX and Amit Choudhri of Radial Vector Consulting for their expertise and hard work.
