La R.S. 37:2704 mandates the following qualifications:
-Citizen of the United States
-Resident of Louisiana
-Hold a current & valid LMSW
-Three years of social work experience

We are excited to share that changes to the Occupational Standards for Social Workers also referred to as the Rules, Standards and Procedures went into effect 10/20/25. The October 20th edition of the Louisiana Register can be viewed https://labswe.org/assets/LA_Register_10-20-25.pdf. Our changes begin on page 50 of the pdf.
More information will be sent in the upcoming weeks and the website will be updated with an official copy of the Louisiana Administrative Code 46:XXV. A few highlights include:
-Rule 503(H) is repealed. It is no longer required to receive board approval for remote supervision.
-All licensed social workers providing or receiving telesupervision must complete 1.5 hours of training in telesupervision. The board is offering training once a week until 06/30/26 - clickhttps://labswe.org/assets/Registration_Forms/Telesupervision_Registration_Form_2025.pdf for November registration information. Training can also be obtained through approved organizations for continuing education - See Rule 1305(A)(1) and the list of pre-approval organizations for social work continuing education.
-Synchronous interactive webinars are considered in-person continuing education.
-All licensed social workers may carry over up to 10 hours of continuing education collected during the period 09/01/25 to 08/31/26 to the collection period 09/01/26 to 08/31/27 with the exception of ethics hours and clinical supervision hours required for BACS. More information is forthcoming.
-Forms to petition for emeritus and inactive status are posted https://labswe.org/page/forms .
-Applications to become a pre-approval organization for social work continuing education are subject to a $250 fee.

In accordance with the Administrative Procedure Act, R.S. 49:950 et seq., the Louisiana State Board of Social Work Examiners proposes to amend LAC 46: XXV. Chapters 1, 3, 5 and 7, repeal Chapter 9, and to enact LAC 46: XXV Chapters 10, 11 and 13.

Public Comments: Interested persons may send comments to Emily DeAngelo, 18550 Highland Road, Suite B, Baton Rouge, LA 70809 or by email to [email protected]. The deadline to submit comments is at 4 p.m. CST on February 10, 2025. If sending by email type "Public Comment - Rules" in the subject line.

Public Hearing: A public hearing on the proposed Rules will be held on February 25, 2025, at the office of the Board of Social Work Examiners, 18550 Highland Road, Suite B, Baton Rouge, LA 70809 at 1 p.m. CST. A link will be provided on the Board’s website https://www.labswe.org 24 hours prior to the public hearing. All interested parties will be afforded an opportunity to submit data, views, or arguments, orally or in writing, at said hearing. Individuals with disabilities who require special services should contact Emily DeAngelo at (225) 756-3470 at least 72 hours prior to the hearing.
