The Louisiana Damage Prevention Law became effective in 1988.

This law requires excavators and demolishers to call a regional notification center at least two full business days before they begin their work. The law also requires owner/operators of underground facilities to mark locations or supply information that will enable excavators and demolishers to locate underground utilities and facilities. At the time the law passed, a non-profit notification prog

ram called DOTTIE (Dial One Time To Inform Everyone) had already been at work protecting vital underground facilities for more than a decade. Today that program is known as Louisiana One Callâ„¢. Our service is free to anyone who disturbs the soil, individuals or companies, whether they work with heavy equipment or hand tools.

What a busy week for Louisiana 811! 💪

Whether we were conducting PowerPoint presentations with excavators and utility operators, participating in local Paradigm Meetings, or meeting with excavators directly in the field, our team stayed focused on one mission: education, safety, and damage prevention.

Sometimes education happens in a classroom. Sometimes it happens in a meeting. And sometimes, the best opportunity to educate is right there on the job site.

We appreciate everyone who took the time to participate, ask questions, share experiences, and continue working with us to make excavation safer across Louisiana.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, but keeping each other safe—on and off the job site—is something we do every day.

In the utility and excavation industry, our commitment to safety extends beyond damage prevention and line location. Protecting Louisiana’s underground infrastructure starts with protecting the people who dig, mark, and maintain it.

Check in on your crew. Listen to your coworkers. Speak up if you notice someone struggling. Safe digging means looking out for the mental wellbeing of the teammates working beside you every bit as much as following damage prevention laws.
