I enjoyed my recent visit to Tulane University with leaders from the School of Medicine and the Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Our discussions touched on many of the areas that shape Louisiana’s health future, including prevention, workforce development, education, and stronger connections between clinical care and public health.

As a physician and Louisiana’s Surgeon General, but especially as a mother, I know that some of the most important care we provide cannot change an outcome, but it can profoundly change what a family experiences next.

That is why the passage of Angel’s Law is so meaningful.

At St. Tammany Health System, we learned from families and caregivers who have shown what compassionate bereavement care can look like: listening, honoring the life of a deceased child, respecting a family’s choices, and making sure no one walks through loss feeling forgotten.

Angel’s Law allows Louisiana to take those lessons and carry them forward statewide.

I am grateful to Kristi Lamarque-Bordelon, the families who shared their stories, the healthcare professionals who have cared for them, Senator Patrick McMath, and everyone who helped make Angel’s Law possible.

This is compassion becoming policy and policy helping build community and resilience becoming better care for Louisiana families.

This is heartbreaking, for Lillian’s family and the Ruston community. 🙏 We are keeping Lillian’s family close in prayer.

As a mother, I know how quickly a story like this can make us worry about our own children. Hopefully this information helps you still enjoy the outdoors:

Primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) is caused by a tiny organism (Naegleria fowleri) that can be found in warm freshwater, like lakes, rivers, ponds, and hot springs - especially in the summer.

There are simple things we can do to lower our risk of this infection. When swimming in warm freshwater, try to keep water from going up the nose. Consider using nose clips, especially when jumping or diving, and avoid stirring up sediment in shallow water. Also, shower after swimming. It’s also good to avoid swimming altogether if you have a wound.

Whether as a physician, a parent, or Louisiana's Surgeon General, one thing is clear: healthy children are better prepared to learn, and education plays a critical role in lifelong health.

Today, I had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Cade Brumley and the Louisiana Department of Education to discuss student wellness, physical education, health standards, and opportunities to prepare the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Congratulations to Dr. Brumley, the Louisiana Department of Education, our educators, students, and families on Louisiana's remarkable improvement from 49th to 32nd on the Nation's Report Card.

This achievement reflects the power of collaboration, accountability, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Together, we are building a healthier, more resilient Louisiana - one student, one family, and one community at a time.
