Louisiana students continue to make significant progress in reading.

K–3 reading proficiency increased 16.5 percentage points from the beginning to the end of the 2025–2026 school year. Every grade level improved.

Kindergarten students led the way, improving by nearly 40 points.

This marks the third consecutive school year of growth as Louisiana continues its focus on strong instruction grounded in the science of reading.

New teachers are invited to join us July 24 on the campus of LSU for a free day of professional learning with colleagues from across the state. Get a head start on the school year and learn more about the support we provide educators new to the profession.

Meet Kalandra Watkins Loyd, a 2027 Louisiana Principal of the Year finalist from Vidalia Lower Elementary School in Concordia Parish Schools.

Under her leadership, Vidalia Lower Elementary was named a Top Gains Honoree in 2024. Loyd focuses on building educator capacity through collaboration, strong instructional practices, and data-driven decision-making.

After being recognized as a semifinalist, Loyd advanced to the finalist round.
