Rubber mulch has a place — it's a cost-effective way to add cushioning to natural, informal play areas, and it looks great in a woodland-style playground.

But it's worth knowing the limits. Loose rubber mulch shifts and displaces under regular use, and like any loose-fill surface, it isn't reliably wheelchair accessible. If accessibility is part of your design requirements, bonded rubber mulch or poured-in-place are better fits — both are unitary surfaces that hold up to ADA and ASTM F-1951 standards over time.

Engineered wood fiber is on roughly 75% of playgrounds in the U.S. — and it's easy to see why. Low upfront cost, natural look, meets the basic ADA requirements on paper. But that last part comes with a catch.

EWF is a loose-fill surface. It displaces under heavy use, compacts over time, and needs regular raking and periodic replenishment to maintain the depth required to stay compliant. Wheelchairs can technically navigate it when it's freshly installed and properly maintained — but in practice, many EWF surfaces aren't maintained well enough to hold that standard.

Poured-in-place rubber doesn't have those variables. It holds its fall protection without replenishment, stays in place, and provides a firm, stable surface that mobility devices can reliably navigate — not just at installation, but years down the road.
