Today is Giving Tuesday! A day dedicated to supporting the nonprofit agencies that make our community a better place to live for all.
Please consider partnering with us here at Maison. Despite all of the challenges brought on by a global pandemic, we’re continuing to house, feed & care for those struggling with mental illness & homelessness. Just as we have been for the past 31 years.
For people with a mental illness, safe and affordable housing can be a challenge and one of the most powerful barriers to recovery. Maison des Ami's mission is to provide a home for one our city's most vulnerable populations. This year we are thankful for our friends who make our home possible.

Maison des Amis of Louisiana, Inc. has the mission to provide a home for mentally ill people who are homeless.
We provide transitional housing for men and women in a dormitory setting, thus assuring this vulnerable population of our community a place where they can be as productive as possible during the day, and sleep safely at night.
Maison des Amis would like to extend a huge thank you to long time supporter, The Edward Rispone Foundation and to The ACTS Group of Our Lady of Mercy Church, for their donations and assistance in the much needed renovation of the bathrooms. Maison Des Amis began serving the homeless population on Thanksgiving Day 1986. MDA has grown to provide housing, social services, and training in a home-like atmosphere for 46 men and women. MDA is Louisiana’s only co-ed facility for homeless mentally ill adults licensed by the Louisiana Department of Social Services.
MDA’s goal for each resident is to stabilize their mental and physical being. This is achieved through monitoring of self-medication, preparation through training and exposure for active participation in the community and providing opportunities for each resident to experience typical adult activities designed to alleviate the feeling of alienation which the disabled often experience. At MDA, residents receive:
A plan of care which identifies the individual’s strengths and weaknesses, sets appropriate goals and benchmarks for development, and prescribes services by a licensed mental health professional and other staff;
Medical monitoring as prescribed by the resident’s plan of care and relevant medical experts
Technical training that provides educational remediation and job readiness skills training necessary to achieve independence;
Psycho-social skills training that provides exposure to everyday adult activities required to live independently; and
Leisure time that offers residents opportunities to become a part of the community through social and recreational activities.
MDA provides housing and social services to mentally ill homeless adults. To receive services at MDA, a potential resident must:
Be over 18;
Present proof of a primary diagnosis of mental illness;
Present proof of homelessness;
Present a current list of prescribed medications; and
Receive a psychological and a psycho-social evaluation.
MDA collaborates closely with local area partners, in order to provide the best, appropriate care for its residents. MDA collaborates with the Alliance for the Homeless, the Capital Area Human Services District and similar mental health providers, and local hospitals to secure resident referrals. Once referred, MDA collaborates with the referring agency to transition perspective residents into appropriate housing.
