In recognition of Black History Month, Louisiana State Police would like to honor and acknowledge Troopers who have broken barriers and blazed trails toward greater diversity within the agency.

Today we honor the first Black Louisiana State Trooper, Dr. Ernest Marcelle Jr.

Marcelle was accepted to Cadet Class # 39 in November of 1967. After successfully graduating in January of 1968, he was assigned to Troop B (Patrol). Shortly after, he transition to the role of Detective.

“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

-Dr Martin Luther King

Another example of how/why the NBSTC & CSTC, through our partnership with Attorney Leonard Mungo, can make a significant difference in the way minority officers are able to navigate the difficult challenges presented to them on the job and how they are then able to defeat those challenges in a meaningful way, a way that one, shines a bright light on the issues. Second, it forces change in the agency operations and creates transparency for all to see! Great job, Attorney Mungo, and we salute those brave individuals who had the courage to stand up and be heard!

Our most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and community of Tyrone White. He was an outstanding friend and Trooper. He was also a great mentor to many and loved counseling kids. Tyrone was among the first counselors at Our Youth Leadership Development Camp and served for many years as a camp counselor at Camp Win-A-Friend. We thank God for M/T Tyrone White!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of retired Louisiana State Police Trooper Tyrone White, Sr., a longtime resident of Thibodaux, Louisiana, who passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family.

Trooper White was a dedicated public servant whose life of service, integrity, and commitment left an enduring mark on our community. He was widely respected and truly beloved by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

From an early age, Marshal Calvin Cooks, Sr. admired Trooper White, often seeing him in uniform within the neighborhood and viewing him as a symbol of professionalism and honor.

Years later, as a young law enforcement officer, Marshal Cooks continued to seek and receive guidance from Trooper White, whose counsel and encouragement helped shape his career.

Marshal Cooks shared that he had the opportunity to visit Trooper White a few months ago. His wisdom, steady leadership, and unwavering dedication to public service influenced countless lives and set a standard that will not be forgotten.

On behalf of Marshal Calvin Cooks, Sr. and the entire Thibodaux City Marshal's Office, we extend our heartfelt prayers, sincere condolences, and deepest gratitude to the White family and friends.

We thank Trooper Tyrone White, Sr. for his years of faithful service and for the legacy of honor, compassion, and mentorship he leaves behind. His memory will forever remain in our hearts and in the community he served so well.
