The Amite River Basin Commission is moving from planning to action—preparing its first 145-acre Upper Amite restoration site, advancing a $2 million federal initiative, supporting nearly $44 million in Bayou Manchac projects, and partnering with LSU to improve flood forecasting.

Real projects. Strong partnerships. Less flood risk.

Last night we presented the Upper Amite River Restoration Project - this time to a standing room only crowd at the East Feliciana Parish Police Jury. As we did recently in St. Helena Parish, we discussed:

➡️ Restoration of retired sand and gravel mines.

➡️ Holding the water temporarily and slowing down the river.

↪️ Restoring meanders back into the river,
↩️ among other restoration features.

🚫No reservoirs.

🫡 Partner only with landowners along the river who want to help restoration.

At The Federation of Greater Baton Rouge Civic Associations 2026 Stormwater Summit, Jay Grymes revealed so much about the 2016 Flood, Bob Jacobsen explained how water works in a dynamic system and ARBC talked about what's underway to address flooding across the Capital Region.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) stated today that all construction contracts have been awarded and contractors are all mobilized. A video of ongoing construction was presented. The project appears to be on track for an end of 2028/beginning of 2029 completion. Meanwhile, the ARBC is overseeing another $350 million in flood projects throughout the Capital Region. So much to do. Time to throttle down.

Louisiana lawmakers expressed frustration over FEMA's absence from a recent task force meeting and continued delays in updating flood maps.
