TO THE OASIS! ๐Ÿน๐ŸŒด
The cadets recently finished their 10th and 11th week of training at the academy where they learned how to identify and properly process impaired operators of both vessels and vehicles in order to protect and make our states waterways and roadways safer.

They also trained in standardized field sobriety testing and the following during the weeks:

- Chemical weapons training
- Impaired driving detection
- Drugged driving detection
- Legal aspects of OWI
- Crime lab submissions for toxilogical testing
- Seated Battery Field Sobriety Testing in a marine environment
- Certified as operators of the Intoxilyzer 9000 Breath Testing instrument
- Learned how alcohol and drugs impair a personโ€™s ability to operate a motorized vehicle or vessel safely and learned the laws in regard to Operating While Intoxicated

Remember, we have game wardens in low places and arenโ€™t scared to enforce the laws when it comes to operating a vehicle or vessel while intoxicated. As always, drive sober or get pulled over.

๐ŸŽฃ Working to restore a native fish species! ๐ŸŸ

LDWF, in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and the Gulf Striped Bass Working Group, recently released 5,500 Gulf Strain Striped Bass fingerlings into the Pearl River as part of ongoing efforts to restore a healthy population capable of supporting a recreational fishery.

But stocking fish is only part of the story. LDWF biologists are also conducting telemetry studies and collecting genetic samples to better understand Striped Bass movement and population health in the Pearl River Basin.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Anglers can help! If you catch a Striped Bass in the Pearl River system or waters east of the Mississippi River, including Lakes Maurepas, Pontchartrain, and Borgne, consider participating in the Striped Bass Collaborative Anglers Project (SBCAP).

๐ŸŽฃ The family that fishes together has fun together!

It was all about family time on Saturday at the Parent-Child Introduction to Fishing Class at Waddill Wildlife Refuge in Baton Rouge. More than 30 participants attended two sessions to learn the basics of fishing before casting a line and making memories together at the fishing ponds. ๐ŸŸ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŸ๐Ÿšค LDWF Enforcement Agents recently joined the Louisiana State Penitentiary, the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff's Office, and God Behind Bars for a Father/Son event at Lake Killarney.

The event, held on the grounds of Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, gave incarcerated fathers the chance to spend meaningful time outdoors with their sons while enjoying fishing, boating, and fellowship. For many participants, it was their first time holding a fishing rod and their first time on a boat. ๐ŸŽฃ๐Ÿšค

LDWF Agents helped teach fishing basics, boating safety, and proper life jacket use while also giving families a closer look at the work of Louisiana Game Wardens. ๐Ÿฆบ The event also provided young people an opportunity to interact with law enforcement officers in a positive setting while being introduced to outdoor recreation and Louisiana's sporting heritage.

We are proud to support opportunities that strengthen families, build positive community connections, and introduce the next generation to the outdoors.๐Ÿ’š

๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ‘ A big thank you to Jordan Matthew for his quick thinking and heroic actions at Elmerโ€™s Island Refuge last week. Jordan, an employee of Reliant Shuttle, LLC, the shuttle service operator on Elmerโ€™s Island, responded to a dangerous rip current incident near Caminada Pass.

In this incident, three people entered the water in succession and became caught in strong currents: a young boy went in first, followed by two women who attempted to help. None of them were able to swim.

At the moment Jordan arrived, he learned what was happening and immediately went into the water. He reached the boy first and brought him safely to shore. He then helped guide the first woman back to safety, before returning for the second woman, who he had to physically pull to shore.

Thanks to Jordanโ€™s decisive action, all three individuals made it safely out of the water. Emergency responders arrived shortly afterward, and everyone involved is safe.

When reflecting on the incident, Jordan noted that many visitors assume the waters near Caminada Pass are calm, but the area can have strong tidal currents that are often underestimated by those unfamiliar with it.

โš ๏ธ Reminder: Rip currents and tidal flows along Louisianaโ€™s coast can be extremely dangerous. Always check local conditions and use caution before entering the water.

Jordanโ€™s willingness to act in a critical moment made all the difference. Thank you, Jordan, for your courage, selflessness, and commitment to helping others. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿฆ The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has adopted a Notice of Intent (NOI) to amend the Special Bait Dealerโ€™s Permit.

The amendment does the following:
โ–ช๏ธRemoves the language referencing the smaller gear allowance and remove the sunset provision of the currently permitted larger commercial gear
โ–ช๏ธ Further establishes the currently permitted commercial fishing gear as rule for use during closed seasons when fishing under a valid Special Bait Dealerโ€™s Permit

Previous regulatory actions allowed for larger commercial nets under the permit during closed shrimp seasons to support live bait for recreational anglers while maintaining uninterrupted operations for bait dealers. The effects of the regulation were evaluated, with no indication of negative impacts on the resource or industry.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Public Comment Opportunity
Interested persons may submit written comments on the proposed rule prior to July 28, 2026 to:

LDWF is partnering with Mississippi State University and NOAA Fisheries Service on an effort to modernize reef fish data in the Gulf.

This project, which will begin in Louisiana this July, depends on recreational anglers fishing offshore to participate, helping fill critical knowledge gaps and supporting more effective fisheries management for species like red snapper, greater amberjack, and cobia.

The LDWF Enforcement Division recently participated in the Future Law Enforcement Youth Academy (FLEYA), a program coordinated by the FBI โ€“ Federal Bureau of Investigation and Tulane University that introduces high school students to a variety of public safety careers. ๐ŸŽ“

Captains Anthony Corner and Ryan Faul met with students to discuss careers in conservation law enforcement and the role that Louisiana Game Wardens play in enforcing hunting, fishing, and boating laws, conducting search-and-rescue operations, promoting public safety, and protecting the state's natural resources. ๐Ÿฆ†๐ŸŸโœจ

We appreciate the opportunity to participate in programs like FLEYA and help students explore future career opportunities in public service and conservation.๐Ÿ’š

The Wildlife and Fisheries Commission has passed a Notice of Intent (NOI) to change the required time to check and rebait passive hooked gear, including yo-yos or trigger devices, limb lines, floating devices containing a hook or hooks (jugs and noodles), and trotlines,

This rule applies to all users of the listed gears โ€“ including recreational, commercial, saltwater and freshwater.

The expanded time to check gear will allow for extra time to check passive hooked gear following unforeseen circumstances such as weather or mechanical issues, while maintaining the intent of the rule to reduce hazards, litter and ghost fishing of abandoned gear.
