The Baton Rouge Police Department honors the memory of Ofc. Terry Melancon Jr., who was killed in the line of duty on August 10, 2005, while executing a search warrant.

Ofc. Melancon and two other Officers had obtained a search warrant for a drug dealers home. The Officers forced their way into the house after its occupant refused to let them in. As they entered, they were met with gunfire. Ofc. Melancon was shot and killed, and two other Officers were wounded. The suspect was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Ofc. Melancon had served with the Baton Rouge Police Department for four years.

ATC ADVISORY: 2025 LEGISLATIVE CHANGE

Public Advisory on Kratom (7-Hydroxymitragynine and Mitragynine)
This advisory is issued to provide guidance on the enforcement of laws concerning the legality of 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine, collectively known as Kratom. As per Louisiana Act No. 41, the possession and distribution of Kratom are now illegal, with the substance classified as a controlled dangerous substance under Louisiana's agricultural commodity law.
What You Need to Know About Current Louisiana Law

Starting August 1, 2025, any manufacturer, wholesaler, or retailer involved in the illegal manufacture, possession, production, sale, distribution, or dispensing of Kratom products will face fines ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 per offense. Offenders may also face up to five years of imprisonment, depending on the severity of the violation and the amount of Kratom involved. Repeat offenders could face higher fines and longer prison sentences, as determined by law.
Additionally, establishments licensed by the Louisiana Office of Alcohol and To***co Control (ATC) are prohibited from selling or storing Kratom products on its premises. Enforcement of this law will begin immediately.

STATE OFFICES CLOSED IN NORTHERN PARISHES THURS. JANUARY 9TH STARTING AT 2:00PM AND FRI. JANUARY 10TH

Commissioner of Administration Taylor Barras is announcing that state offices in North Louisiana parishes will be closed starting at 2:00 PM on Thursday, Jan. 9th through Friday, January 10th, as a winter storm passes through the area. The parishes that will be closed are: Sabine, Natchitoches, Grant, La Salle, Catahoula, Concordia, Tensas, Franklin, Caldwell, Winn, Red River, De Soto, Bienville, Jackson, Ouachita, Richland, Madison, East Carroll, West Carroll, Morehouse, Union, Lincoln, Claiborne, Webster, Bossier, Rapides and Caddo.
