TOMORROW, step inside the Jonathan Hale Family House, known as “Old Brick,” as part of Ohio Open Doors, a statewide event presented by the Ohio History Connection!

Built in 1825, Old Brick was home to Jonathan Hale and his family and offers a unique glimpse into life in early Bath, Ohio.

But this isn’t just a chance to walk through a historic house, you’ll have the opportunity to learn the story of the Hale family while you’re standing in the very rooms where their lives unfolded.

We will be sharing the history of Jonathan Hale, his family, their lives in Bath, and the role they played in building the community around them. Come explore the house, ask questions, and hear the stories that bring the Hale family to life.

The doors are open so come look inside!

From September 10–20, historic buildings and landmarks across Ohio are opening their doors as part of Ohio Open Doors, a statewide event presented by the Ohio History Connection!

This year, Western Reserve Historical Society is opening the doors to three historic homes for FREE, including our very own Jonathan Hale Family House at Hale Farm & Village!

🏠 Shandy Hall | Geneva | September 15
Built in the early 1800s, Shandy Hall may look modest from the outside, but there are 17 rooms to explore, including an original cellar kitchen, dining room with scenic French wallpaper, and Robert Harper’s law office.

🏠 Holsey Gates Handyside House | Bedford | September 16
Step inside this impressive 1892–93 Queen Anne-style home, built for Holsey Gates, grandson of the founder of Gates Mills. Explore the architecture and details of one of Bedford’s historic treasures.

🏠 Jonathan Hale Family House “Old Brick” | Hale Farm & Village | September 18
Built in 1825, this three-story Federal-style home was the heart of the Hale family. Explore its unusual layout, from the open first-floor living spaces and formal rooms upstairs to the six small bedrooms on the third floor.

Three historic homes. Three opportunities to step inside places you don't normally get to explore and hear the history!

And best of all? All three open houses are FREE, thanks to generous community support that helps WRHS preserve these historic places and share their stories with the public.

As students are back in school, here's a fun Hale history fact: C.O. Hale was once a student at Oberlin College! 🎓

While attending Oberlin, C.O. developed an interest in politics, an interest that would eventually take him from the farm to the Ohio House of Representatives.

But C.O. never left his farming roots behind. He returned to the farm after serving in the Ohio legislature, where he continued his work in agriculture and became known for his maple sugar operation.

So as the school year begins, we're thinking about C.O. Hale's own school days and wondering...

Lights, camera, CREATE! 🎬✨

We’re excited to share what our friends at the Cleveland History Center have in store!

Calling all future filmmakers, set designers, prop masters, and imaginative humans ages 5–105! Hands ON! Set Design Fun for Families is coming to the Cleveland History Center on September 19.

Families can build mini movie sets, experiment with props and lighting, and discover how the little details can completely transform a scene. Drop in anytime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and get creative!
