BIG CHANGES COMING FOR CHILD CUSTODY LAWS IN MISSISSIPPI

I’m not some activist judge who just makes up the law as I go along. Nor do I make the law what I want it to be. I study and follow the laws enacted by the legislature.

Effective July 1, our child custody laws are changing. It will be presumed that both parents should have joint physical custody of their children unless the Chancellor (judge) makes specific findings that such an arrangement would not be in the best interests of the children. And the judge SHALL construct a parenting time schedule which maximizes the time each parent has with the children.

I’ve made the difficult decisions relative to child custody in the Youth Court. I approached each case prayerfully, considered the evidence, and made decisions which followed the law and were in the best interests of the children.

My next post will detail how Mississippi’s child support laws are changing.

If I am fortunate enough to be elected as your next Chancery Judge, I will continue to study new laws passed by the legislature and apply them fairly, impartially and with the utmost seriousness.

We had a full day of campaigning in Panola and Tallahatchie counties. I met people from all over the District at the Batesville car show, and we received a warm welcome from the Mayor of Tutwiler.

Today we campaigned in Carrollton, Vaiden and Grenada. The trip was very successful and we recruited new volunteers to help us in the Southern portion of the district. Now I’m off to speak in Pope. I’m thankful for our volunteers, friends and supporters.

Yesterday, I completed twelve additional educational hours with the Mississippi Judicial College. We had excellent teachers and speakers.

If fortunate enough to be elected your next Chancery Judge, I promise to continue with education to ensure that your judge has the knowledge and experience to serve the people with impartiality, dignity, and fairness.

Seventeen speakers will lead twelve sessions to update our Mississippi Municipal Judges on new areas of the law at our conference which is in progress in Biloxi.

I was twice elected by my fellow judges to lead the organization.

If fortunate enough to be elected your next Chancellor, I pledge to continue my judicial education often in order to be the best judge I can be.

Today we pause to honor and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We owe a debt to them, and their families, that we’ll never be able to repay. Join me and my team today in remembering these heroes! 🇺🇸

During the past week, we have covered a lot of ground in Grenada, Montgomery and Carroll Counties.

We ate lunch at Pap’s, a restaurant in Grenada, on Tuesday and stayed for almost two hours. Richard Flautt has the best personality and always has a smile on his face. The meal was delicious.

I was able to hand out cards, and the people seemed to be interested in the campaign. They take their politics very seriously and many people assured me that they would vote for me. I felt right at home.

After making stops at the Grenada and Montgomery Courthouses, we stopped by to visit my dear friend, Tracy, who is the City Clerk in Winona. She introduced me to the Mayor.

The people in Carrollton couldn’t have been nicer. Carroll County is new to the 3rd Chancery Court District. They will have three new Chancellors, and I hope to be one of them.

Our Chancery Court District is so large and spread out. I’m doing my best to meet the people by stopping at gas stations, businesses, car dealerships, going door-to-door, and meeting fine people who are so kind to introduce me to their friends and relatives.

I’ll be back in Batesville on Monday for three events. Then I am going to see my mother in Moss Point.

I’ll attend the Mississippi Judge’s conference in Biloxi during the rest of the week. I’m looking forward to seeing my fellow judges from all over the state. I’ve not missed a conference in 30 years, and it is always fun and relaxing.

I thank all of my friends in Tallahatchie, Grenada, Panola, Tate, Carroll, Yalobusha and Montgomery Counties. I’ll work as hard as I can to earn your votes.
