A NOTE FROM MRS. VAN DER SPUY CONCERNING BOOK CHECKOUT

Starting the week of August 31, 2026, students began checking out materials from the Eagle Mountain Library. During the month of August, students learned about library expectations, check-out procedures, and most important good library book care.

This year in the library, books will be allowed to be checked out for a term of two weeks. 1st -5th grade are allowed to take their books home to read with a trusted adult or parent if they wish to do so. Students will be allowed to check out 1 book initially and after the first 9 weeks, possibly 2 books if they show good stewardship. Books that are not returned to the library by the due date, will be marked as overdue and you will start receiving reminder e-mails.Fines will be assigned at the end of the year. Students will return books during their scheduled library times.Since we do not have the luxury of having many copies of the same book, the fines are being used not as a punishment, but as an encouragement for students to return the books in a timely manner so another student may enjoy the book.

Students will be guided toward age-appropriate sections and since the school uses the A.R. program, the books are color-coded with stickers to remind them of their reading level, but sometimes mistakes do happen. Students are allowed to choose their own books. Learning to select a book is something each student needs to discover. This discovery may include books that are too easy, too hard, or too boring. They sometimes simply choose a book because of its color, size, or topic. Also, some students may prefer to check out non-fiction books or graphic novels in their journey to find out what they really enjoy reading.

The library system can also be monitored from home. Go to the Batesville School District Page and hover over Families. At the very bottom you will see BSD Libraries. In Follet Destiny you can view the collection or access A.R., etc. Students will be charged a replacement fee for any books that are damaged or lost. Please keep all library books away from pets, water, and food. These are the biggest threats to a book's health. Also, please remind your child not to write or color in the books! Replacement fees for books can really add up…so please help keep the library’s books safe!

Thank you for taking the time to address these library items with your child/students. Together we can make the library a fun place to learn. There are many exciting things planned for the library this year. Check us out in the school’s newsletter or Facebook for the most up to date library information!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you.
