When was the last time you went camping? One of the best parts of camping is sitting around the fire, eating smores and telling ghost stories.

Batesburg-Leesville may not have a "celebrity" ghost, but it has plenty of local eerie vibes and places where the history is a little too loud. If you're looking for spooky tales in the area, here’s a local ghost story you could share around the camp fire.

The Ghost of the Old High School
The Old Batesburg-Leesville High School (later the middle school) was a classic Tudor Gothic Revival building that sat on Summerland Avenue for nearly a century. Before it was removed in 2017, it was a magnet for local ghost hunters who claimed it was haunted.

• The Vibe: For years, locals reported a heavy "creep factor" in the basement, which remained pitch dark even during the day.

• The Legend: While most urban legends involve generic apparitions, some students and trespassers claimed to see flickers of movement in the windows of the abandoned building long after the power was cut.

Modern Day "Haunts"
If you prefer your ghosts to be active and wearing makeup, you will have to wait until the fall. Then you can visit Stutman Hollow, a popular haunted trail in Leesville. It is so popular you have to make your reservations way in advance!

Now to grab the graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate...

✊🏽 What do you know about our newest federal holiday?

🎉 Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19, commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. It marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce the emancipation of enslaved people, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

🗓️ It is a day of reflection, celebration, and resilience, recognized as a federal holiday in 2021. It is the first new federal holiday established since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983.

📜 Origins and Historical Context
📨 The Delayed News: Although President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, it was not immediately enforced in all areas, particularly in Texas.
📜 General Order No. 3: On June 19, 1865, Union Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston and issued General Order No. 3, which stated: "The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free."

🗣️ "Juneteenth" Name: The name is a blend of "June" and "nineteenth".

🥁 Early Celebrations and Traditions
🙌🏽 The First Celebrations: Newly freed people in Texas began celebrating on June 19, 1866, making it the oldest known annual commemoration of the end of slavery.
🎶 Traditions: Early celebrations included prayer, song, dance, and storytelling, often serving as a way to reunite families separated by slavery.
🍉 Cultural Symbols: Red foods and drinks, such as hibiscus tea and strawberry soda, are traditional, symbolizing resilience, sacrifice, and joy.

📈 Significance and Evolution
⭐ Legacy: Known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, it acts as a second independence day, focusing on the freedom of African Americans.
🦅Federal Holiday: On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden signed the bill establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
🎨 Modern Observance: Today, it is celebrated with festivals, parades, and educational events to honor Black history and culture.

Saturday, June 20th belongs to the Man of Steel and a mountain of sugar. My summer body is currently sponsored by Nonnie’s Pops and pure, unadulterated cinema nostalgia.

If you see me sprinting across the grass at the Summer Movie Night this Saturday, it is not because General Zod is invading. I am simply trying to outrun the melting point of a gourmet popsicle while balancing a mountain of candy in my hand.

The Adult Survival Guide
The Standoff: Staring down the Nonnie's Pops menu like it is a high-stakes poker game.
The Decision: Ordering the premium flavors because we are adults and nobody can stop us.
The Multi-Task: Trying to open candy packaging silently so you don't have to share.

Pro-Tips For Grown-Ups
Bring Wet Wipes: Essential for your hands, your face, and your remaining dignity.
Wear Dark Colors: Camouflage the inevitable chocolate drips happening in the dark.
Pace Yourself: The movie is about 2 hours long, but your candy supply will last exactly twenty minutes.
