The Genesee County Sheriff's Office is $10,000 closer to its $50,000 fundraising goal for a second K-9 and handler to work alongside "Frankie" and Deputy Chris Erion after receiving a donation yesterday from NEXTera Energy. And the K-9 fund is getting pretty close to that $50,000 goal, said Sheriff....

Brevard County Florida.
IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS THAT WE SHARE THE LOSS OF “K-9 SONIC” WHO PASSED AWAY THIS WEEK WHILE STILL IN SERVICE TO OUR AGENCY AND SCHOOLS

All of our hearts are broken today as we share with the community the loss of one of our team members, “K-9 Sonic” who was assigned to Corporal Kirk Geweniger of
our School Security Team!!

Sonic’s unexpected passing is the result of injuries that were originally sustained during a traffic crash that injured both he and Cpl. Geweniger in 2017. Kirk’s vehicle was rear ended by a driver who was Driving Under the Influence and the injuries Sonic sustained continued to manifest in spite of regular treatments to rehabilitate them.

On Wednesday, Cpl. Geweniger observed that Sonic appeared to be in extreme physical pain and as a result he was taken to Dr. Elizabeth Chosa in Merritt Island who has worked diligently since 2017 to care for Sonic and his injuries. Dr. Chosa thoroughly
examined Sonic and determined that his injuries had progressed too far and he was in extreme pain with no possible relief. With no chance of recovery and his quality of life being diminished, Dr. Chosa and our team made the very difficult decision to medically lay him to rest with Kirk and other members of our agency by his side until he peacefully passed away.

Sonic was an amazing dog who loved his job and his family!! We will never be able to know exactly how many lives Sonic and Kirk changed while partnered together as part of our School Security Team, but throughout their career they served over 75,000 students, 9,000 Teachers, Faculty and Volunteers and helped keep watch over 100 Public, Charter and Private Schools.

There is no question that everyone who came in contact with Sonic had an immediate attraction and appreciation for his services. Because of their hard work and dedication Cpl. Geweniger and Sonic were named “Law Enforcement Partners of the Year” in 2018 during the Central Florida Crimeline Annual Awards Ceremony. Sonic was the very first Law Enforcement K-9 assigned full-time to serve our students and staff members in our Brevard County Schools and was also extremely instrumental in the promotion of our anonymous student tip line and smartphone app “SpeakOut Hotline” that has without question already saved lives in our schools.

I would like to share our deepest gratitude for Dr. Chosa and her staff for their love and compassion of our Sheriff’s Office K-9 Team members. She and her team remained by Sonic’s side to support Kirk and provided Sonic the best medical treatment imaginable until the very end.

Sonic will be deeply missed by our agency, our Brevard Public Schools, our students and our community as he has had an amazing impact on each and everyone of us!! Tonight we ask that you keep Sonic, Cpl. Geweniger, his family, and our entire agency in your thoughts and prayers as we say good by to a local hero and loyal friend!!

WELL DONE MY GOOD AND FAITHFUL SERVANT...WE WILL TAKE IT FROM HERE!!

Sheriff Wayne Ivey
