💜 Today, the Genesee County Office for the Aging staff proudly wore purple in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, observed annually on June 15th, shines a light on the often hidden issue of elder abuse and reminds us all of the important role we play in protecting vulnerable older adults.

Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, financial, and neglect. By increasing awareness, checking in on older loved ones and neighbors, and knowing where to turn for help, we can work together to prevent abuse and support healthy aging in our community.

If you suspect elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation, trust your instincts. Speak up. You do not need to have all the answers—you just need to make the call.

Whether delivering meals, providing companionship, assisting with programs and events, offering support, or simply sharing a smile, volunteers demonstrate every day what it means to put compassion into action.

🚘VOLUNTEER MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION DRIVERS NEEDED🚘
Become a medical transportation driver and be the reason a neighbor can see their doctor. Through Office for the Aging, a small group of drivers help older adult residents with rides to medical appointments outside of the County. They use their own vehicles, drive to areas they prefer, on the days and at the frequency they determine, with mileage reimbursement available. The volunteers pictured, Marjorie and Sherry, both express how much they enjoy conversations on their medical trips and that the experience brings happiness to their lives. They appreciate how important access to care is and feel good knowing they're helping others. Give it a try! Call OFA at (585) 343-1611 to become an essential part of someone's path to health!

💜 June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 💜

Every older adult deserves to live with dignity, respect, and freedom from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

One of the ways the Genesee County Office for the Aging works to protect older adults is through participation in our local Enhanced Multidisciplinary Team (E-MDT).

The E-MDT reviews cases involving financial exploitation, physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect. Cases are discussed collaboratively, recommendations are developed, responsibilities are assigned, and follow-up occurs to ensure progress is being made. This coordinated approach helps older adults access services, strengthens investigations, and increases accountability across systems.

Wear purple on June 15 and join us in raising awareness and building a community where older adults are safe, valued, and respected.

🚨 If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
