πŸš²πŸ›΄ Know the Difference Before You Ride

Not every electric rideable is considered an e-bike or e-scooter under Batavia's e-mobility ordinance.

βœ… E-bikes, e-scooters, and other micromobility devices are permitted when they meet ordinance requirements.

❌ Electric dirt bikes, e-motos, minibikes, and pocket-bike style devices are not allowed on public property, including streets, sidewalks, trails, and parks.

Not sure what type of device you have? Look for clues such as pedals, motor size, speed capabilities, labeling, and overall design. Devices that resemble motorcycles or dirt bikes often fall into the prohibited category.

Before you ride, make sure your device is legal and understand the rules that apply. Knowing the code helps keep everyone safer on our roads, sidewalks, and trails.

πŸ’‘ About Power Restoration

The City of Batavia Electric Division responds to outages affecting Batavia Electric customers within City limits. Some residents within Batavia receive electric service from ComEd and should report outages directly to ComEd.

After severe weather, crews begin assessing damage and restoring power as quickly and safely as possible. For safety reasons, bucket trucks cannot be used until sustained winds are below 30 mph. Restoration efforts and damage assessments often occur simultaneously so crews can restore service as quickly as conditions allow.

Stay weather aware, avoid downed wires, and monitor official City communication channels for updates throughout the storm.

We appreciate the feedback and understand why residents have questions about the age requirements for e-scooters.

The age requirement for e-scooters is based on Illinois state law, not a rule created by the City. Illinois law already restricts the use of low-speed scooters (those traveling less than 10 mph) to riders age 18 and older. Because state law was already more restrictive for slower scooters, it did not make sense to allow younger children to operate newer e-scooters that can travel much faster. While cities can adopt some local regulations, they cannot create rules that are less restrictive than state law or that conflict with it. In other words, the City cannot lower the minimum age established by Illinois law.

The City also adopted the age restrictions with safety in mind. Today's e-scooters and e-bikes can travel at speeds far greater than traditional bicycles, often sharing roads, intersections, and multi-use paths with vehicles, pedestrians, and other cyclists. Higher speeds require quick decision-making, awareness of traffic laws, and the ability to react safely in complex situations. While maturity and responsibility vary from person to person, laws generally rely on age thresholds because they provide a clear and consistent standard that can be applied fairly to everyone.

Batavia developed an ordinance in response to safety concerns raised by residents, law enforcement, and community stakeholders. The goal is to reduce crashes and injuries while helping ensure that riders have the maturity and experience needed to operate these devices responsibly. Through our Roll Smart campaign, we're focused on education, safety, and helping everyone enjoy e-mobility devices responsibly while keeping our streets, sidewalks, and paths safe for all users.

πŸ“£ Calling all parents: Know the Code Before They Ride

Not all e-bikes and e-scooters are designed for riders of every age.

Under Batavia's e-mobility ordinance:
πŸ›΄ E-scooters are permitted for riders ages 18 and older.
🚲 Class 3 e-bikes, which can reach higher speeds, are permitted for riders ages 16 and older.

Before allowing your child to ride, take a moment to check the manufacturer's age recommendations and understand the rules that apply to each device. Parents and guardians play an important role in helping young riders learn traffic laws, safety practices, and responsible riding habits.

Knowing the code before you ride helps keep riders, pedestrians, and the entire community safe.
