As everyone heads out to enjoy the lake, river, or pool this Labor Day weekend, Bassett Rescue Squad reminds you to make water safety a priority.

🛟 Wear a life jacket — especially when boating, kayaking, tubing, or swimming in the river. A life jacket can save your life, but only if you’re wearing it.

🚤 Boat sober and always have a responsible, alert operator.

🌊 Respect the river. Currents can be stronger and water deeper than they appear. Watch for changing water levels, submerged rocks, trees, debris, drop-offs, and other hidden hazards.

👀 Keep children within arm’s reach around the water and never rely solely on flotation toys for protection.

🛶 If you’re kayaking, canoeing, or tubing, know your route and conditions before you go, stay with your group, and let someone know where you’ll be and when you expect to return.

⛈️ Watch the weather. Heavy rain and storms upstream can cause river conditions and water levels to change quickly, even when the weather where you are seems fine.

📱 Consider keeping a charged phone in a waterproof container and know your location so you can provide it quickly if you need emergency assistance.

Whether you’re spending the weekend on the river, lake, or around the pool, take a few extra precautions so everyone makes it home safely.

Dangerous heat and humidity are expected over the next several days with heat indexes reaching 100-107 degrees. Please take precautions to protect yourself, your family, and your pets.

💧 Stay hydrated
🌳 Limit strenuous outdoor activity
❄️ Take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade
🚗 Never leave children or pets in a vehicle
👵 Check on elderly or vulnerable neighbors

Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Heat stroke is a medical emergency — call 911.
