I can't wait to go back.

This story is very much like Mt. Desert Island, before the cars came.

Before Highway 61 was completed, all traffic to and from Split Rock Lighthouse came via footpath or water transport. One of Keeper Covell’s daughters, Beulah, remembered coming to the lighthouse on the passenger steamer America when she was in fourth grade.

“My sister… took me down and put me on the America and sent me up here. Dad came to get me in the lighthouse launch. It was rough. You know what the waves get like… we’d go down [from the America to the launch] on a rope ladder… I was just petrified.”

After the tense boat ride to the shore, Keeper Covell put Buelah in the tramcar used for hauling supplies from the dock up the steep slope to the main site. Buelah got to ride to the top of the hill on the tram tracks, which was an exciting end to a terrifying journey for a fourth grader!
