Experience Obtaining Accreditation through the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (IACME)

Big Horn County Coroner’s Office – Basin, Wyoming

The process of obtaining accreditation through the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners (IACME) has been a significant milestone for the Big Horn County Coroner’s Office. As a small, rural jurisdiction in north-central Wyoming, our office recognized early the importance of adhering to nationally recognized standards to ensure professionalism, accountability, and public trust in all aspects of medicolegal death investigation.

Our journey toward accreditation began with a comprehensive internal review of existing policies, procedures, and documentation practices. We evaluated our operations against IACME’s rigorous accreditation standards, which emphasize consistent investigative procedures, evidence handling, case documentation, safety, and staff training.

One of the key challenges was aligning rural operational realities with the detailed criteria required for accreditation. To address this, we modernized our data management system and implemented standardized forms for scene investigation, chain of custody, and report writing. The office also prioritized training and continuing education for all deputies to ensure compliance with the latest investigative and forensic protocols.

Throughout the process, the IACME accreditation team provided valuable support and guidance, offering feedback and recommendations during preliminary assessments. This collaboration helped our office strengthen internal procedures, improve interagency communication with law enforcement and medical providers, and reinforce the integrity of our casework.

Achieving IACME accreditation formally recognized the professionalism and dedication of our office to the citizens of Big Horn County. It validated our commitment to excellence in death investigation and affirmed that our operations meet or exceed national standards. Beyond the accreditation itself, the process fostered a culture of continual improvement—ensuring that quality, compassion, and accuracy remain at the forefront of our mission.

This truly is an achievement that took a lot of time and effort, but we got it done!! We are now one of the only three County Coroner's Offices in the state to be accredited, one being Laramie, and the other Natrona County. Thank you again citizens of Big Horn County for letting us serve you in the most professional and compassionate way we can. Without your support, we could have never completed this endeavor.

New Accreditation Announcement!

The International Association of Coroners & Medical Examiners (IACME) is proud to welcome Big Horn County, Wyoming as our 53rd accredited office! 🏅

This achievement also makes Big Horn County our smallest accredited jurisdiction—a true testament that dedication to excellence in medicolegal death investigation applies at every level, big or small.

👏 Congratulations to Michael K. Jameson, Coroner, and the entire Big Horn County Coroner’s Office team for their commitment to the highest professional standards.
