Barstow Welcomes The Big Texan
On the evening of June 7, 2026, Barstow proudly welcomed travelers from across the nation as the Main Street of America Caravan, the Tin Can Tourists, and representatives from the legendary The Big Texan Steak Ranch arrived at the historic Harvey House. The gathering celebrated the rich heritage of Route 66—known as the “Main Street of America”—during the highway’s centennial year festivities.
Residents, visitors, Route 66 enthusiasts, and caravan participants filled the grounds of the Harvey House for an evening of community, history, and friendly competition. The highlight of the event was a live presentation of The Big Texan’s world-famous 72-ounce Steak Challenge, inspired by the iconic challenge that has become a Route 66 legend in Amarillo, Texas.
Representing Team Barstow were Mayor Tim Silva, Barstow Police Chief Chris Kirby, and Assistant City Manager Ken Chappa, who stepped up to take on the challenge before an enthusiastic crowd. Their participation brought energy, laughter, and hometown pride to the event as spectators cheered them on throughout the competition.
The evening also featured appearances by several well-known competitive eaters, including Raina Huang, whose participation drew excitement from fans and food challenge enthusiasts. Their presence added an extra level of entertainment and showcased the growing popularity of competitive eating within the Route 66 community.
Beyond the steak challenge, the event served as a celebration of the friendships and connections formed along America’s most famous highway. Caravan participants shared stories from the road, exchanged Route 66 memories, and experienced Barstow’s hospitality at one of California’s most significant Route 66 landmarks. The Harvey House, home to the Route 66 Mother Road Museum, provided a fitting backdrop for an event honoring the history and enduring legacy of the Mother Road.
