*** A Cautionary Tale Regarding AI Data Centers ***
As I get more into video editing and since I recently started using Adobe Premier Pro instead of the cheaper video editing software I was using, I decided it was time to rebuild my desktop computer. (And yes, it's great for gaming too!)
But boy was I in for a surprise. I just ordered pretty much the best graphics card available, the ASUS GeForce RTX 5090. I am currently running a much older, but still capable, 3090ti.
For those that don't know, while many other components are very important for video editing and rendering, the Graphics Card is the single most important piece of tech regarding processing power on a PC.
The current MSRP on this card is $2k, which is still a lot. Well $2k would be an absolute steal today! AI Data Centers are absolutely gobbling these cards up by the tens of thousands as they are also one of the most important components for what they do as well.
You don't even want to know what I paid for my card. There are so many people like myself that do editing and rendering from small home offices that need cards like these. And these data centers are creating a massive supply and demand problem that has doubled the price of these cards in most markets. Sometimes even more than double!
I am not against technology, but the proliferation of AI into nearly all aspects of our lives really concerns me. When people stop learning how to type a post (like this one) and instead just put a few prompts into an AI input and let "the computer" write it for them, that is a massive problem that will have implications for generations to come.
I don't see why standing up against this problem wouldn't be a Bi-Partisan Issue. Please refrain from any political comments on this thread unless you are agreeing that BOTH sides of the political spectrum need to join forces to make sure that AI is used in certain areas where it is a benefit, but not allowed to proliferate in areas that will make us stupid and lazy. We are a Nation of inventors, renegades and thinkers. Let's NEVER lose that.
My 2 cents.
