Barrington's Resilience and Energy Committee utilized a federally funded Brown University – led project to install water level sensors above the Barrington River, adjacent to Route 114 protecting Barrington's Evacuation Route. These sensors have been installed at critical points along Route 114 to monitor flooding, at no cost to taxpayers.

Real-time data and alerts are available to the public when water reaches critical levels — set for road level, six inches above, 18 inches above, and 30 inches above.

⚠️ The Lower Providence River conditional shellfish Area 16E is closed to shellfish harvest until further notice due to a sewage discharge from the East Providence wastewater collection system.

A break in a pipe near the East Bay Bike Path has resulted in 800,000 gallons of untreated sewage discharging in the area of Watchemoket Cove. The cause of the break is currently unknown. The discharge has been significantly reduced but has not been eliminated at this time. DEM’s Office of Compliance and Inspection is investigating.

East Providence Wastewater Treatment Facility staff continue work to repair the leaking line. Access to the East Bay Bike Path around Watchemoket Cove may be temporarily impacted during repairs.

DEM and RIDOH will conduct water and shellfish testing, and the area will re-open once results meet FDA standards for safe shellfish harvest. For more information on emergency and conditional area water quality related shellfish closures, call DEM’s 24-hour shellfishing hotline at 401-222-2900.

For more information on shellfish harvesting classification, visit www.dem.ri.gov/shellfish
