Structure Fire – Vernon Ave

Barre Fire responded to a structure fire on Vernon Avenue early this morning. Crews quickly contained the fire, preventing further extension. There were no reported injuries.

Thank you to the Rutland Fire Department - Rutland MA, Barre Police Department, and District 8 Fire Investigation Team for their assistance.

Did you know Barre’s first fire department was formed by the workers of the Barre Wool Combing Company?

On November 29, 1912, the Barre Wool Combing Fire Brigade was officially formed. Pictured here is a look at the original meeting minutes from that day, documenting the formation of the brigade and the election of its first officers and members.

For nearly 114 years, generations of firefighters have worked to protect and serve our community and one another. Every member has played a part in building the department into what it is today, carrying on the legacy that those first members began back in 1912.

It’s amazing to look back at where it all started and appreciate the history that continues to shape the Barre Fire Department today. 🚒

Last night at approximately 5:49 PM, the Barre Fire Department was dispatched to a reported vehicle fire. The caller advised that the fire was extending toward a nearby residence, prompting a Working Fire to be struck while units were en route and mutual aid partners were notified.

Upon arrival, crews found a fully involved vehicle in close proximity to the home, with no extension to the structure. Mutual aid was subsequently stood down, and Barre units (Engine 1, Engine 4, Engine 5, Ladder 1, and Ambulance 1) handled the incident.

The fire was quickly extinguished and overhauled, with no damage to the residence. Great work by all involved, and thank you to our mutual aid partners for always being ready to respond when needed.
