🐸 Big news for one of Cape Cod’s rarest amphibians!

After more than a decade of conservation work, Eastern Spadefoot toads at Mass Audubon’s Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary in Falmouth have reached a major milestone. For the first time, young, translocated spadefoots successfully returned to restored vernal pools and reproduced naturally during two separate breeding events this summer, a critical step toward establishing a self-sustaining population.

This groundbreaking project is the first known effort to restore Eastern Spadefoots through the creation of breeding habitat. Over the course of the project, researchers released approximately 40,000 headstarted metamorphs (young toads that had completed their transformation from tadpoles into land‑dwelling juveniles) to the area. The goal has always been to help these rare amphibians reclaim the landscape on their own.

It's an exciting conservation success story and a powerful reminder that habitat restoration works. 💚
