Lets talk about E-Bikes and electric Scooters!
In Wisconsin, e-bikes with motors ≤ 750 watts are classified as bicycles, requiring no driver's license, registration, or insurance. They are divided into three specific classes.
E-Bike Classes
Wisconsin uses a standard three-tier classification system for electric bicycles:
Class 1: Pedal-assist only; motor ceases assistance at 20 mph
Class 2: Throttle-assisted; motor ceases assistance at 20 mph.
Class 3: Pedal-assist only; motor assists up to 28 mph. Must have a speedometer and riders must be at least 16 years old
Where You Can Ride
Roads and Bike Lanes: Compliant e-bikes can be legally ridden anywhere a traditional bicycle is allowed. They follow the same rules of the road (yielding to pedestrians, obeying traffic signals).
Sidewalks: Riding e-bikes on sidewalks is generally prohibited as we do not have an ordinance that permits this.
Paths and Trails: The bike trail and the trail to Birch Lake are open and encourage to be use used for E-Bikes
Helmets are highly encourage to be worn by all E-bike and E-scooter operators!
Electric Scooters
“Electric scooter” means a device weighing less than 100 pounds that has handlebars and an electric motor, is powered solely by the electric motor and human power, and has a maximum speed of not more than 20 miles per hour on a paved level surface when powered solely by the electric motor. “Electric scooter” does not include an electric personal assistive mobility device, motorcycle, motor bicycle, electric bicycle, or moped
To operate
State law does not require you to have a driver license to ride an electric scooter. They follow the same rules of the road (yielding to pedestrians, obeying traffic signals).
Title and plate
Scooters cannot be titled or registered with the Wisconsin DMV
Electric scooters are permitted by default on all roads, sidewalks, and paths under Wisconsin State Statute § 346.94(18s)(b)
Under Wis. Stat. § 346.94(18s)(c), electric scooters have a global Speed Limit of 15mph on all roads, sidewalks, and paths
All electric scooter riders are highly encouraged to wear a helmet and operate safely!
