2026! 100th Black History Month Celebration.
"A Century of Black History Commemorations,” the 2026 theme, marks the 100th anniversary of the first celebration, “Negro History Week,” founded by Carter G. Woodson and the
the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in 1926.
While the federal celebration pauses to commemorate a century of national icons and stories, the City of Barnesville joins the nation for this milestone with the unveiling of our own Black History. In Celebration of Black History Month, visit downtown Barnesville to see the Black History Month banners displayed as a tribute to the progress and the persistence, the success and the struggle, the advancements and the adversity in our community.
This time of reflection is a reminder that Black History is American History. It is more than a month; it is 365.
The Banners, a historical first for our City, are a continuous recognition of our progress and persistence. Please share any names and facts with Mayor Kelly Hughes or Mayor Pro Tem Christopher Hightower.
