Ocean County Mosquito Commission We provide County residents and visitors with protection from nuisance mosquitoes and their diseases

The mission of the Ocean County Mosquito Extermination Commission is to provide mosquito control measures for the residents and visitors of Ocean County. This valuable service is provided by the reduction of mosquito populations that are a nuisance factor and/or involved in disease transmission. This is accomplished through the use of the most up-to-date techniques involved in Integrated Mosquito

Management through Public Relations, Surveillance, Water Management and the use of Larvicides. These methods are conducted in a way that allows for the highest level of safety with the lowest level of effects possible on humans, non-target species and the environment in the most cost effective way.

It's the time of year when we get many calls about 'swarms of mosquitoes'. This time of year, these swarms are most likely not mosquitoes but gnats or biting midges, also more commonly known as No-See-Ums. They hatch in cycles when the weather gets warmer and humid, usually following rain since they are water-dependent for part of their life cycle. A female can lay up to 450 eggs at a time; this is why we see them in swarms after they hatch. Although they are incredibly annoying and can have uncomfortable bites, they don't spread diseases and only live about two weeks on average.
Can you spot the mosquitoes in this picture? (answer in the comments)
