Some boating safety advice from our friends at SeaTow

As the holiday weekend approaches we need to reflect the tragic year it has been on the New Jersey waterways. So when boating this weekend follow some of these key safety points:

1. If you are operating a vessel, DO NOT CONSUME ALCOHOL. Alcohol can affect judgment, reaction time, balance, and coordination. Conditions on the water, including sun, heat, wind, engine noise, vibration, and the constant movement of the vessel, can amplify the effects. Boating Under the Influence (BUI) is the leading cause of fatal boating accidents, yet it is 100% preventable. Designate a sober skipper for more info go to Sea Tow Foundation's Sober Skipper.

2. Prepare your boat before leaving the dock, Always check your batteries, fuel supply, bilge pumps, navigation lights, and VHF radio. Also make sure required safety equipment, including, first aid kits, properly fitting life jackets, fire extinguishers, and visual distress signals are in good condition and easy to access.

3. Slow down and pay attention- At higher speeds, a boat can cover considerable distance in only a few seconds, leaving less time to react to another vessel or an unexpected hazard.

4. Life Jackets save lives, they only work when they are worn.

5. Check the weather, New Jersey weather changes quickly, there are numerous phone applications available. For example, the Sea Tow App provides access to marine weather forecasts, live radar, wind conditions and severe weather alerts to help boaters stay informed before and during their time on the water.

These 5 points can make the difference with your boating experience. A successful day on Barnegat Bay is one that ends with everyone returning safely to shore.

Have fun. Be responsible. Look out for one another.

Enjoy the holiday weekend—and most importantly, get home safely.

Proud moment for BLFAS Officers, positive remarks from Deputy EMS Coordinator Mike Wolfschmidt - “Wolfschmidt said, adding he was impressed with the all-female crew from the Barnegat Light First Aid Squad. “You guys were on it. Seriously, you guys were absolutely on it.”

There’s a particular sound when emergency crews arrive – radio chatter and purposeful footsteps – before the noise fades, and all that’s left is a mental image of a ticking clock. On Monday evening, July 27, volunteer first responders raced against that clock as a boat accident simulation un...

Stay Sharp on the Water

The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau reminds all boaters that safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Boating under the influence (BUI) puts lives at risk. Alcohol slows reaction time, impairs judgment, and increases the likelihood of serious incidents. Always designate a sober operator before heading out.

Speed matters- excessive speed and careless wakes can damage property, capsize smaller vessels, and injure others. Follow posted limits, slow down in crowded or narrow areas, and remain mindful of your wake.

Nighttime operations require extra caution. Reduced visibility and increased difficulty judging distance and speed make hazards harder to detect. Always maintain a safe speed, use proper navigation lights, and stay alert to surrounding traffic and debris to avoid potential dangers.

Life jackets save lives. Wear a properly fitted personal flotation device every time you’re on the water. Most boating fatalities involve individuals who were not wearing one.

Pay attention. Distracted boating is dangerous. Keep your eyes on the water, scan for hazards, avoid distractions like phones while operating, and always have a dedicated lookout.

Safe boating starts with you!
