During our last stated meeting for July, the Detachment was honored to be presented with an absolute beautiful gift. Pictured below, Mr. David Beckman is presenting Commandant Chris Remaley and Det. 1248 with a handcrafted wooden box with EGA, in appreciation of the service each member has and continues to contribute to this Nation and our very own River Valley.

If interested, Mr. Beckman makes these locally, and he’s done a couple variations. His number if wanting to contact is, 479-650-5896.

On this Day in USMC History-

14 July 1993: The USS IWO JIMA was decommissioned after over 30 years of service in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The ship was named for the World War II battle during which three Marine divisions ousted 20,000 entrenched Japanese troops. The Iwo Jima was commissioned 26 August 1961, and it was the first ship specifically designed as an amphibious assault ship from the keel up.

On this Day in USMC History-

11 July 1798: President John Adams approved "An Act for Establishing and Organizing a Marine Corps", and it became law. The following day, the President appointed William Ward Burrows the Major Commandant of the new Corps. In August, Major Burrows opened his headquarters in Philadelphia, at that time still the capital of the new nation.

In other words… creating a new branch of the military.

BUT….. "The act further stipulated that when at sea the Marines would be under the command of the Navy, and on shore, the Army," "This peculiar compromise plagued the Corps for years to come."

Who We Are

Meetings are held the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 1900 at our detachment building which is located at the corner of Darby and Ellis Streets in Chaffee Crossing (Fort Smith, AR). Dues are $40.00 per year.

Members of the Marine Corps League join together in camaraderie and fellowship for the purpose of preserving the traditions and promoting the interest of the United States Marine Corps. This is accomplished by banding together those who are now serving in the United States Marine Corps and those who have been honorably discharged from that service: voluntarily aiding and rendering assistance to all Marines, Marine Veterans and to their widows and orphans, and by perpetuating the traditions of the United States Marine Corps through fitting acts to observe the anniversaries of historical occasions of particular interest to Marines

Our detachment has the premier Honor Detail for the River Valley of Arkansas. We do color guards and funeral burial details with rifle salute and taps at the National Cemetery and private cemeteries when requested by the family/funeral home for a deceased veteran. We also will stand casket guard for Marine veteran’s visitations at the request of the family/funeral home.

Our detachment is responsible for the TOYS FOR TOTS every year in the River Valley and you will find us working from September through January to ensure that the needy children in our local area have some happy surprises at Christmas.
