Senior and Community Center
This will be a little more complicated email than usual as there is a lot going on. As you can see, I attached a copy of the flyer for the Town Wide Picnic this Saturday and will provide more detail further down in this message. There are some other new items to discuss but they will also be described below. Please read to the end as we are looking for ideas for fun things to do.
The email included the monthly newsletter and calendar that Bonnie Boyle has been kind enough to write. Please take a look at both the documents for more information. Please let me know if you would like to sign up for the email if you don't already get it.
But first, hereβs the schedule of events and meals for this week:
LUNCH β Tuesday, June 2 β 12:00 noon β Baked ham, potato salad, garden salad, baguette, and dessert
BREAKFAST β Thursday, June 4 β 7:30β9:00 β cooked to order, as usual -- your choice of eggs any way you prefer, bacon, sausage links or patties, ham, pancakes, French toast, waffles, home fries, hash, fresh fruit cocktail, orange juice and more.
As always, meals are $5.00 β additional donations are always welcome. Gluten-free options are also available, so please let us know if those dishes are something you would like or need. We also try to accommodate other dietary restrictions for those who cannot eat certain foods.
Here are the upcoming activities:
Wednesday, June 3 β 11:30-12:30 β Tai Chi β Please note that Tai Chi will restart on Wednesday. The classes are $5 and will be back to the normal schedule next week. Feel free to join us even if you have never tried it. It is focused on improving balance and flexibility for seniors who are beginners, so no one needs to worry about looking like an amateur.
Tuesday, June 16 - 6:00PM - monthly Trivia night. These continue to be great successes, thanks to Bob and Linda Pulford. Everyone is welcome whether you are part of a team or come by yourself. We always have room for individuals to join a table even if you are new to the group or the game.
Friday, Friday, June 19; 6:30 -9:00 β The Traveling Trout will be back at the Senior and Community Center for their jam sessions. They have been practicing some new music and invited some other bands and musicians to join them. Come on down and enjoy a very fun evening with good music.
Thursday, June 25, after breakfast - Weeders and Readers meets during the Spring/Summer months as a garden club and during the Fall/Winter it becomes a book club. Meetings are normally the last Thursday of the month beginning at 9.30 a.m. (after breakfast). For further information, please call or text Lorna Delaney (860) 379-6419.
If you would like to hold a crafts or other activity or have an additional exercise class that you would like, please let me know. If you have ideas for events or programs you would like to have us schedule, please reach out to me and I will work to get them on the calendar.
Here are the other events:
β’ Saturday, June 6 Town Picnic β I have attached the flyer and more details of the event are available on the Town website at https://municipal-documents.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/barkhamsted-ct/town-hall/articles/news/37124/rich_text_field_file/17800004901/Weekly%20email%2005.28.26.pdf. Please check it out as it will be a day that is full of great events for the young and old. The bring your own picnic starts at 3:00 and the drone show will be at 9:00 with lots to do in between.
β’ Tuesday, June 9 Breakfast at the Barkhamsted School β the 5th graders are inviting seniors to breakfast from 9:00-10:00. The flyer is attached and they are requesting an RSVP by Tuesday. The timing is such that you can see the kids and the school and still come to lunch as usual. I think it is a great idea for the 11-year-olds to spend time with folks from our generation.
β’ Friday, June 12 β the Barkhamsted Historical Society has the 4th in their series of talks at the Center. Itβs titled βPlay Ballβ, the history of the Riverton Baseball Fields and they have asked me to provide the history on how the townspeople created the Riverton baseball fields. I hope you come see me try to do justice to one of the best projects that a group of us worked on for the town. The ballfield has been constantly improved for the past 40 years.
The last item that will be available when you come to the Center is a questionnaire about trips you would like us to provide. We have access to an 11-passenger bus which can take groups on day trips anywhere in the State. There are suggestions on the paper and there is space to write in other trips that you would like to suggest.
As I have mentioned, we are still collecting food for the Community Food Bank in Barkhamsted. It is extremely important that those who can help, contribute what they can, even if it is a small amount. The food bank is at the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church and does a great service for those in need. Check their page for their operating hours. We also have a box at the Center if you would like to leave a donation off and we will make sure it gets to the Food Bank.
Their page is https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61551048540688. They are open every other week on Monday and Thursday. This will be open on
Monday, June 1st and June 15th, 4-7 p.m.
Thursday, June 4th and June 18th, 2-4 p.m.
If you have food or cash to donate and they are not open, please message them on Facebook to let them know about your donation.
That's it for today. Please stay safe. Feel free to reach out to me if you need assistance and I will do whatever I can to help or get help from the Town.
