The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is managed as part of the Northern Maine NWR Complex, which also includes Aroostook NWR, Sunkhaze Meadows NWR and Carlton Pond Waterfowl Production Area. Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is one of the northernmost National Wildlife Refuges in the Atlantic Flyway, a migratory route that follows the eastern coast of North America. The refuge provides important feeding and nesting habitat for many bird species, including waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, upland game birds, songbirds, and birds of prey. The refuge consists of two divisions that cover 29,339 acres. The refuge headquarters are located in the Baring Division (20,531 acres) and is located off U.S. Route 1, southwest of Calais, Maine. The Edmunds Division (8,808 acres) is between Dennysville and Whiting on U.S. Route 1 and borders the tidal waters of Cobscook Bay. Each division contains a National Wilderness Area--thousands of acres managed to preserve their wild character for future generations. Please visit these websites for more information:

Last week we bid farewell to our three outstanding summer interns, Katie, Peyton Lee and Lauren.

Since May they have tackled a wide variety of projects across our refuge complex from bird banding to pit-tagging river herring to clearing beaver debris to pulling invasive plants. And they did all the dirtiest jobs with smiles on their faces. We wish them all well as they continue their education and search for permanent jobs as wildlife biologists.

Moosehorn NWR has a decades-long history of hosting and training wildlife management interns. Hundreds of early career professionals in the field cut their teeth in our forests and wetlands and we are proud of all of them. Please wish these three good luck as they begin new chapters in their careers!

Today we say goodbye and Thank You to our fantastic 2026 YCC crew.

These young people spent the last six weeks performing very challenging manual tasks around the refuge, including NEW trail construction (Lot's of it!), old trail clearing and widening, building removal, trash clean up, invasive plant removal (their fav! :D) and many other "dirty jobs."

They also had a chance to learn about all the biological programs on the refuge and the region, spending time with our refuge biologists and local conservation organizations and tribal leaders.

We bid farewell to Katie (leader), Issac (youth leader), Soren, Taylor and Kaden. They did themselves and their families proud and will leave a lasting legacy at Moosehorn

YCC reunion this Friday, August 7th!

Please help us get the word out to any and all former Moosehorn YCC members.

The Friends of Moosehorn NWR will help us host a YCC reunion potluck luncheon. We will gather at the YCC building (the old YCC dining hall) at Noon. Bring a dish, stories, photos and YCC memorabilia to share!

If you were part of the 50-year YCC history at Moosehorn, consider yourself invited. We hope to see you there!

People have been asking about the status of our blueberry fields, so here is an update!

The first blueberries are just beginning to ripen, so pretty soon will be a prime time to stop by. Visitors are allowed to collect (by hand, no rakes) up to two quarts of blueberries per person, per day.

There are three blueberry fields located from 1/4 to 1/2 mile west of the public parking area (where the public bathrooms and flagpoles are) on the headquarters loop trail.

Calling all YCC Alumni!

The Friends of Moosehorn will be hosting a YCC reunion on Friday, August 7th. All former Moosehorn YCC members are invited. It will be a come-as-you-are potluck luncheon at the old YCC building (dining hall for some of you!).

Come share your stories, your photos, your scrapbooks and your potluck meal. Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge's YCC history is as old as the program itself. Since the 1970's, hundreds of teens throughout Maine have spent their summers here working on the refuge.

Easily the #1 question we get asked is "where can I see a moose?"

Well, moose are where you find them!

This morning, you might have seen these two young moose along the shoulder of Charlotte Rd. or maybe not. Timing is everything and seeing a moose on the refuge involves a lot of luck!

Just a reminder to keep your eyes out for wildlife as you drive through the refuge!
This young bear didn't seem to mind the traffic speeding by, but he will be hard to see if he decides to cross the road - especially at night!

Looking for some guided outdoor activities this weekend? You're in luck!

Moosehorn NWR will host several guided bird walks and presentations as part of this weekend's Downeast Birding Festival. Tours will be at both the Baring and Edmunds Divisions of the refuge.
