🐾 NEW DEPUTY ALERT! 🐾
The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office is proud to introduce our two newest team members:
K9 Dax and K9 Rooster!
These two young deputies are stepping up to keep our community safe. They will play a vital role in:
❌ Narcotic searches & interdiction
🔍 Tracking and search & rescue operations
🤝 Community outreach and events
This exciting addition to our agency was made possible through a fantastic collaborative effort. We want to extend a massive thank you to the Nelson County Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and the Nelson Fiscal Court for approving the Opioid Funds that made bringing Dax and Rooster home possible.
Please join us in giving K9 Dax and K9 Rooster a warm Nelson County welcome! 🦴🚓

On Monday, June 1, 2026, Deputies with the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Loretto Road regarding a report of a male individual acting erratically and experiencing a severe mental crisis.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies identified the individual as James Pinkston. Pinkston was exhibiting highly manic behavior and was later determined to be under the influence of narcotics.

Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation and communicate with Pinkston, but he remained entirely non-compliant. The situation escalated when Pinkston attempted to attack a responding deputy and gain unauthorized entry into an assigned agency vehicle. A physical struggle ensued, and deputies were able to successfully subdue and apprehend him.

Due to his altered mental state, Nelson County EMS (NCEMS) was called to the scene to provide medical evaluation. While receiving treatment inside the ambulance, Pinkston assaulted a paramedic by kicking them in the chest.

Deputy Perkins is the arresting deputy. Pinkston was transported and lodged into the Nelson County Correctional Center.
