Congratulations to the 2024 Human Rights Commission writing challenge finalists! Caroline Mattingly, Andrew David Goff, Max Hurst, Cecily Marden, Aubbrey Cambron, Grant Copeland and Olivia Hamilton. Our topic is Activism Works! Winners will read and receive awards at our Annual Recognition Event Tuesday, November 19, 6 pm at the Bardstown Civic Center. All are invited! Free and light refreshments will be served.

Youth Writing Contest 2024


The Bardstown-Nelson County Human Rights Commission is sponsoring the annual writing contest for the youth of our community.
Students in grades from 6 to 12 may enter.

ACTIVISM WORKS!

“Activism works….no one is too small to make a difference.” So says Greta Thunberg, a young Swede who began in her teens to advocate for the environment. On 1965’s Bloody Sunday, John Lewis, a now-famous American civil rights crusader, marched across a bridge and later said “…we have a mission to be on the right side of history”. Across time, many ordinary citizens have spoken out for human rights issues and brought about positive changes. As older concerned citizens are passing on the torch of involvement and volunteerism, we ask:
What is the role of youth in the future of human rights activism? What area(s) of basic human rights/needs will your generation see as priorities worth advocating for? What will you do to “become the change(s) you wish to see” in our ever-changing society? In 500 words or less, write about the above.

Rules: 500 words or less-typed. Include name, age, school, grade, parent/guardian’s name, and contact information (address, e-mail and phone).
Submit as PDF attachments to email address below.
Prizes: Prizes will be awarded for both 6-8 and 9-12
1st prize -$150
2nd prize - $100
3rd prize -$75
Honorable mentions -$50

Finalists will be notified and may be asked to read their submissions at
Our Annual Recognition Event
where winners will be announced.

Sharing information about the availability of support services and opportunities for everyone with concerns about housing, public accommodations and employment is vital. Thanks for your post!

I attended the monthly HRC meeting this week. Thanks to Mary Spalding for her continued support and advocacy.

During this meeting, the lack of affordable housing seemed to be an on-going theme. I agree that affordable housing is a problem not just in Nelson County but across our country.

However, I also feel that it is also important to break generational dependency on federal housing. In March of 2023, the Bardstown-Nelson County Career Center was founded as a one-stop outreach for employment, housing, education, mental health, counseling, and other wrap-around services.

With the assistance of the Bardstown-Nelson County Career Center and other local institutions like Bethany Haven, United for Recovery, Adult Education, and ECTC resources are being provided in Nelson County to assist with getting citizens back on their feet and off government dependency.
