Today is the anniversary of the attack on Firebase Tomahawk. The base was occupied by the 2nd Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment and 2nd Battalion, 138th Artillery when it was assaulted by the People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) 4th Regiment on the night of 19 June 1969, the assault was repulsed for the loss of 13 U.S. (including 9 Kentucky Army National Guardsmen from the 138th Artillery including five from Battery C: David Collins, Ronnie Simpson. Ronnie McIlvoy. Luther Chappell. and Jim Moore.) and 23 PAVN killed. This resulted in the deadliest battle for the United States Army National Guard in the Vietnam War. We honor the brave men who fell on that day and invite you to visit the Hal Moore Military Museum to gain a better overview of this fateful battle.

On this day, June 6, in 1944, the largest amphibious landing ever attempted occurred on Normandy beaches in France. It was called Operation Overlord. Thousands of brave men fought and died on this day in an attempt to secure freedom from tyranny. One is reminded of the poet Longfellow's quote: "In the world’s broad field of battle, In the bivouac of Life, Be not like dumb, driven cattle! Be a hero in the strife!" To learn more about this incredible battle and the brave souls who fought on June 6, we invite you to visit our Hal Moore Military Museum which tells the story of America's wars through timeless artifacts and fascinating exhibits. We hope to see you soon in Bardstown, KY.

Today is Kentucky's 234 birthday! Kentucky's birthday is celebrated annually on June 1, marking the day in 1792 when it officially became the 15th state to join the Union. Kentucky was the first state admitted to the United States west of the Appalachian Mountains. If you want to know what Kentucky was like in 1792, we invite you to visit our Pioneer Village. Our military museums have artifacts and exhibits that demonstrate how uniquely positioned Kentucky is both geographically and politically in the unfurling of America's story. Let's pray that this great state has celebrates another 234 years of birthdays. As Dr. Thomas Clark, Kentucky's historian, once noted, “the past must surely provide a threshold to the future,” and that history “will help us prepare to meet tomorrow.”

On this day, May 28, in 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act into law. The federal government "negotiated" the removal of the southeastern Native American tribes in states such as Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. Around 60,000 Native Americans were forced westward into “Indian Territory” (present-day Oklahoma). The mass migration resulted in more than 4,000 deaths and became known as the Trail of Tears. You can learn more about the First Nation peoples and this sad chapter in US history in the Dogtrot cabin at the Old Bardstown Village. For one low price, you can tour the village and three additional museums including our world famous National Civil War Battles of The Western Theater Museum. We hope to see you soon!
