Becoming a paramedic is a significant accomplishment that requires dedication, perseverance, and countless hours of studying, clinicals, and hands-on experience. For David, the journey was about more than earning another certification—it was an opportunity to grow as a provider and utilize more advanced skills for patient care.

David has been with Nelson County EMS since January of 2026, working part time and has now become a full-time employee with us!
David’s father has worked as a paramedic for approximately 20 years, so when David began exploring career options, his father encouraged him to give EMS a try. David took the advice and entered the field but admitted that it was a little intimidating at first. After taking a short break to explore other opportunities, he realized that no other career felt quite right. He returned to EMS and quickly discovered that it was a better fit than he ever expected. What started as a career suggestion from his father ultimately became a path that David found truly suited him.
David’s decision to further his education and become a paramedic grew from the knowledge and experience he gained through his time in EMS and from working alongside experienced providers. He found himself knowing what could potentially help his patients but being unable to perform certain skills or interventions because they were outside the scope of practice of an EMT. Becoming a paramedic would allow David to expand his scope of practice, build upon the knowledge and experience he had already gained, and provide a broader range of skills and interventions to better care for the patients he encounters.

David enjoyed learning the new skills, such as starting intravenous and intraosseous access, endotracheal intubation, and others. “𝑆𝑜 𝑚𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑐𝑜𝑜𝑙 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑑𝑜, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑖𝑡 𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑓𝑒𝑒𝑙𝑠 𝑙𝑖𝑘𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢'𝑟𝑒 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝 𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑠.” Even with the joy of learning all the new skills and knowledge, paramedic school still has challenges. David found that due to how many students were in his class, scheduling clinical and ride time was difficult. Then actually attending those scheduled sessions was hard to mentally handle because you’re not paid for that time. Balancing school, work, family, and everyday life proved to be one of the most difficult aspects of pursuing his paramedic license. There were many times when David felt like it was all simply too much, but quitting was never an option in his mind. He did not want to be the person in the class who gave up because it would have been easier. He had set a goal for himself, and he was determined to see it through.

Along the way, David learned that sometimes the best way to keep moving forward was to step back. Giving himself a day or two to completely disconnect from school, work, and clinicals helped him recharge and maintain the drive he needed to keep going. David also credited his motivation to the couple of friends in the class. “𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑝𝑢𝑠ℎ𝑒𝑑 𝑚𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑎 𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑡𝑙𝑒 𝑏𝑖𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛. 𝐼𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 ℎ𝑎𝑑 𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑢𝑡, 𝐼 𝑚𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑑𝑟𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑒𝑑 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑎𝑠 𝑤𝑒𝑙𝑙.”

Looking back, he has some advice for the person he was on the first day of paramedic school:

𝑃𝑙𝑎𝑛 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑟𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑑𝑣𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑡ℎ𝑠 𝑜𝑟 𝑦𝑜𝑢'𝑙𝑙 𝑏𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑙𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑠𝑐𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑏𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑣𝑎𝑖𝑙𝑎𝑏𝑖𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦.

And for those who may be considering EMS as a career, his advice is simple:

𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑠 𝑘𝑒𝑦. 𝑅𝑒𝑔𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑖𝑓 𝑖𝑡 𝑖𝑠 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑛𝑒𝑟, 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑟, 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑐𝑜-𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑒𝑟𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑖𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑠. 𝐸𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑢𝑠𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑠 𝑜𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑚𝑢𝑛𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑒.

Now that he has earned his paramedic license, the journey doesn’t end there. Looking ahead, David plans to continue working in EMS to gain experience and confidence as a paramedic. He also commented that he may return to school for something else but doesn’t know what yet.

Becoming a paramedic is a significant accomplishment that requires dedication, perseverance, and countless hours of studying, clinicals, and hands-on experience. For Ashton, the journey was about more than earning another certification—it was an opportunity to grow as a provider and strengthen his knowledge on his path to becoming a Physician’s Assistant.

Ashton has been with Nelson County EMS since January of 2026, working part time as he continued to attend college at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond Kentucky.

Ashton’s path began with an early interest in medicine and practicing medicine. During high school, he had the opportunity through a premed program to participate in hospital clinicals. He spoke about how spending time in the Emergency Room stuck with him most, adding that the high intensity environment was part of what he enjoyed about it. He watched first responders bring in patients who were treated in the field. " 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝐼 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑑 𝐼 𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑝𝑟𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑒 𝑜𝑢𝑡𝑠𝑖𝑑𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑜𝑠𝑝𝑖𝑡𝑎𝑙, 𝐼 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑖𝑛."

As part of his degree program at EKU, Ashton knew that he had to go through the paramedic program. When asked about his time during the program, one of the things he found most interesting was meeting his classmates. He spoke about how it can be hard to explain what the job consists of for those who are outside the world of EMS. Having classmates who were also experiencing a sense of isolation from other aspects of college allowed Ashton to see how they could come together and bounce ideas and concerns off of because they were all going through the same program. Of course, still, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Ashton described that trusting his training was the hardest part. During the paramedic program, there are many new skills introduced and an immense amount of knowledge taught in the classroom. When it was time to put what he had learned in the classroom into practice through ride time and hospital clinicals, he found himself surrounded by people who had been practicing medicine for years. At times, he struggled to trust his own training and knowledge, feeling as though he didn’t know as much as those around him. "𝑀𝑦 𝑟𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑓 𝑐𝑎𝑚𝑒 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑧𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑡 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑖𝑛𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑦 𝑤𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑚𝑦 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑒𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑝𝑢𝑟𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑙 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛."

Of course, earning a paramedic license can sometimes truly test a person. Adding school to an already busy life presented its own set of challenges. Ashton found that the hardest part was understanding that school required 90% of his attention. Meaning he had to make a lot of sacrifices including time he could be spending with friends or family so he could focus on learning. He knew it was important to remember that he is still his own person and existed outside of the classroom. Whenever he started to feel overwhelmed or burnt out, he remembered that growth, in regards to learning, requires a step back and giving yourself a break to truly understand the topics.

Despite all the challenges, Ashton leaned into his faith. He dealt with times where his confidence felt lacking, leaving him in a state where he struggled to keep going. But he gave himself a daily reminder that being granted the opportunity to attend paramedic school was God’s will. That this was the path the Lord had destined for him, and that he would persevere through the trials along the way.

Looking back, he has some advice for the person he was on the first day of paramedic school:

Now that he has earned his paramedic license, the journey doesn’t end there. Looking ahead, Ashton says his goals are to continue practicing and learning! He has two years remaining in college and once he graduates, he will commission into the Army as an officer and will then attend Physician Assistant school through the Army. Ashton intends to retain his paramedic license so he can continue to work in the prehospital setting.

Captain Chris Claytor and EMT (now Medic) Paige Beavers were recognized recently by ZOLL for a Clinical Save. After working an incident in which a patient was in V-Fib. The patient made a full recovery and is doing much better.

Thank you for your hard work and staying calm in a stressful situation, giving the patient the best care possible for the best outcome possible.

For Jayden, who prefers to go by Paige, the journey was about more than earning another certification—it was an opportunity to grow as a provider and continue serving the community at a higher level.
Paige has been with Nelson County EMS since October of 2024, working both Full Time and Part Time while also working at Marion County EMS.

Paige’s path into EMS began as an unexpected journey during a difficult time in her life and quickly became something she loved. “𝐼 𝑓𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑑 𝑝𝑢𝑟𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑖𝑛 𝑏𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑑𝑎𝑦[𝑠].” Reflecting on what motivated her to continue her education and pursue paramedicine, she spoke about how she wanted to be able to do more for the patients she encountered. Taking the extra step to gain more knowledge and higher-level skills meant she could step up and have a larger impact during critical calls. When asked about her time in paramedic school, one of the things she found most interesting was “𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤ℎ𝑦 𝑏𝑒ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑤𝑒 𝑑𝑜 𝑖𝑛 𝐸𝑀𝑆 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑒𝑒𝑖𝑛𝑔 ℎ𝑜𝑤 𝑚𝑢𝑐ℎ 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑝𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 𝐼 𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑧𝑒𝑑.” Of course, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. Paige described that being patient with herself and understanding that knowledge takes time as the most difficult aspects of the program. When things became difficult, she learned that she had to trust the process and give herself grace to learn and grow throughout.

Of course, earning a paramedic license can sometimes truly test a person. Adding school to an already busy life presented its own set of challenges. Between work, family, and everyday responsibilities, she also had to balance in going to class, doing clinical time at the hospital, ride time on the ambulance to get hands-on experience at the paramedic level, find time to study, and take care of her own wellbeing through as normal of a personal life as possible. With all that, she sometimes asked herself if it was worth being exhausted and missing out on things. When the demands of paramedic school began to feel overwhelming, she focused on the bigger picture, reminding herself, “𝑇ℎ𝑖𝑠 𝑤𝑎𝑠 𝑜𝑛𝑙𝑦 𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑜𝑛 𝑜𝑓 𝑚𝑦 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑢𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑦 𝑎𝑙𝑙 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑜𝑛𝑔 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠, 𝑠𝑎𝑐𝑟𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑒𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔.”

Despite all the challenges, she found that her trust in God was her motivation to keep going. Paige knew that He wouldn’t have set her on this path if she wasn’t capable of making it through, so she prayed, trusted His plan, and kept going. Paige also accredited her success to the strong support system of family, friends, and coworkers who believed in her, encouraged her, and always reminded her what she was capable of when she struggled to see it herself.

Looking back, she has some advice for the person she was on the first day of paramedic school:
𝑇𝑟𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑜𝑛'𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑒𝑡𝑏𝑎𝑐𝑘𝑠 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑣𝑖𝑛𝑐𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑛'𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒. 𝑃𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑑𝑖𝑐 𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑜𝑜𝑙 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑖𝑛 𝑤𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑛𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑒𝑑, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑘𝑒𝑒𝑝 𝑠ℎ𝑜𝑤𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑢𝑝, 𝑘𝑒𝑒𝑝 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑤ℎ𝑦 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑑. 𝑇ℎ𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑡𝑒𝑚𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑟𝑦, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑦 𝑤𝑖𝑡ℎ 𝑦𝑜𝑢.

And for those who may be considering EMS as a career, her advice is simple:
𝐺𝑜 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑜 𝐸𝑀𝑆 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑔𝑒𝑛𝑢𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑙𝑦 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑢𝑡 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒, 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒 𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑦. 𝑌𝑜𝑢’𝑙𝑙 𝑠𝑒𝑒 𝑝𝑒𝑜𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑛 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑠𝑡 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑣𝑒𝑠, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑚𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑔𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑑𝑜 𝑤𝑖𝑙𝑙 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑏𝑖𝑔𝑔𝑒𝑠𝑡 𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑓𝑒𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑒. 𝑆𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 𝑠𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑗𝑢𝑠𝑡 𝑛𝑒𝑒𝑑𝑠 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡𝑜 𝑙𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛, ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑜𝑟 ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑡𝑣 𝑟𝑒𝑚𝑜𝑡𝑒. 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑦 ℎ𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑙𝑒, 𝑘𝑒𝑒𝑝 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑟𝑛𝑖𝑛𝑔, 𝑡𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑐𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠𝑒𝑙𝑓, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑑𝑜𝑛’𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑠 𝑜𝑟 ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠 𝑚𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑓𝑜𝑟𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑤ℎ𝑦 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑟𝑡𝑒𝑑. 𝐸𝑀𝑆 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢, 𝑏𝑢𝑡 𝑖𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑔𝑖𝑣𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑎 𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑢𝑟𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡’𝑠 ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑡𝑜 𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑑 𝑎𝑛𝑦𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑒𝑙𝑠𝑒.

Now that she has earned her paramedic license, the journey doesn’t end there. Looking ahead, Paige says her goals are to focus on gaining experience, become the best paramedic she can be, and to stay open to whatever opportunities the future holds.
