Gum disease is unique in that it is both liked to many areas of health, and highly preventable. Unfortunately, poor gum health is all too common and has been known to increase the risk for other illnesses, not the least of which is cancer. So remember to get a checkup every 6 months!

Gum disease can be associated with cancers of the head and neck. Good oral hygiene can reduce this risk and associated gingivitis and periodontitis.

Studies have linked people who suffer from gum disease with people who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis. Both are tied to the immune system, but the link between the two may go deeper than that. While proper oral health won't prevent arthritis, it is a good defense against gum disease and its related diseases.
