Today, on Patriot Day, Barberton City Schools pauses to remember and honor the lives lost, the brave first responders who ran toward danger, and the enduring strength of our nation on September 11, 2001.

We invite our entire Magic community to join us for the City of Barberton’s 9/11 Memorial Ceremony as we gather to pay our respects.

We are especially proud to highlight students from our Public Safety and Fire Safety programs, who will be participating in the ceremony alongside local first responders. These dedicated students represent the next generation of public servants, stepping up with courage, discipline, and a commitment to protecting our community.

As we continue our Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) report card series, today we are focusing on one of the most foundational pieces of student success: 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆

Reading by the 3rd grade is a critical milestone that predicts long-term academic achievement. Here is a look at how the state measures early literacy and how Barberton City Schools is taking a proactive approach to build strong, confident readers.

📊 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗢𝗗𝗘𝗪 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁
The state assigns an Early Literacy Star Rating (ranging from 1 to 5 stars) based on a combination of three key measures in Kindergarten through 3rd grade.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝟯𝗿𝗱 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴: The percentage of 3rd graders who score proficient or higher on the state English Language Arts (ELA) assessment.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝟰𝘁𝗵 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲: The percentage of 3rd grade students who meet state reading requirements to move on to 4th grade.

𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗞-𝟯 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆: A measure of how effectively we help students who start "off-track" in reading make rapid progress and get back "on-track."

🚀 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗹𝗹 (𝗦𝗙𝗔) 𝗶𝘀 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

To ensure every student gets the support they need from day one, Barberton has fully implemented the research-backed Success For All (SFA) reading framework across our elementary and intermediate grades.SFA isn't just a curriculum—it’s a comprehensive, district-wide approach that changes how reading is taught:
🎯 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴: Students are assessed regularly and placed in instructional reading groups tailored directly to their current skill level. This ensures every child is challenged without feeling overwhelmed.
🗣️ 𝗖𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴: Students actively engage with peers, discussing complex texts and building vocabulary and comprehension together.
📊 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮-𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀: Continuous assessments allow teachers to track growth in real time, providing immediate intervention for struggling readers before they fall behind.
🤝 𝗔 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲: Our teachers and staff use aligned strategies, tools, and routines across classrooms, creating a seamless learning experience as students move from grade to grade.

As the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) prepares to release annual state report cards, we are taking a closer look at one of the most vital measures of high school performance: 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗲

📜 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜𝘁 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗗𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗮
In Ohio, earning a high school diploma requires meeting a 3-part state framework, along with Barberton Board of Education standards:

𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀: Barberton High School requires a minimum of 21 credits (including 4 English, 4 Math, 3 Science, 3 Social Studies, Financial Literacy/Economics, PE/Health) plus 10 hours of Community Service.
𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆: Passing state assessments in Algebra I and English II, or showing competency through alternative pathways like College Credit Plus (CCP), Career-Tech credentials, or military enlistment.
𝗗𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Earning at least two Diploma Seals (such as Science, Citizenship, Honors, Community Service, or Industry Credentials), with at least one being state-defined.

📊 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) calculates a district’s graduation rating using a weighted combination:
4-Year Cohort Rate (60% weight)
5-Year Cohort Rate (40% weight)

This combined percentage determines a district's Graduation Component Star Rating on the state report card:
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Stars: 96.5% or higher
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 Stars: 93.5% to 96.4%
⭐⭐⭐ 3 Stars: 90.0% to 93.4%
⭐⭐ 2 Stars: 84.0% to 89.9%
⭐ 1 Star: Below 84.0%

🎯 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘁 𝗚𝗼𝗮𝗹: While we ultimately want all of our students to graduate in 4 years, our immediate, realistic target is to achieve at least a 90% graduation rate while actively striving for continuous growth year over year.

𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀
At Barberton City Schools, we celebrate every single Magic who earns their diploma.

While state accountability formulas rely heavily on a rigid 4-year timeline, we know real life doesn't always follow a standard schedule. Many of our students navigate significant challenges—overcoming medical or personal obstacles, balancing family responsibilities, or working through specialized learning pathways—that may require a 5th year or non-traditional route to reach the finish line.

To us, a student who demonstrates resilience and stays the course to graduate in 5 years is a tremendous success story. Our commitment to our students doesn't expire when a 4-year clock runs out. We remain dedicated to providing the support, intervention, and time every individual student needs to graduate ready for enrollment, enlistment, or employment.

In September, the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce will release annual state report cards for school districts across Ohio.

Standardized state tests give us one specific snapshot of student performance on a single day. But here at Barberton City Schools, we measure success by much more than a single test score. We measure it in student growth over time, career credentials earned, musical and artistic achievements, and the daily dedication of our staff.
