The Finnish American Heritage Center (FAHC) has an immediate opening for a summer docent. This is a perfect position for a student or retiree who thrives when interacting with people and has a passion for history and culture. The docent will begin work in early to mid June and continue through August; the position could be extended through September if availability allows.

The docent will set the tone for a positive visitor experience at the FAHC. Duties will include greeting patrons, providing advice about and/or tours of the Center and its exhibit areas, providing information about the local area, and ensuring the FAHC is prepared each day to meet visitor needs.

Hours can vary, but are anticipated to be weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rate of pay will be $14 per hour; the docent will be a contract employee and will be paid biweekly.

The docent will play a key role in ensuring all visitors have an engaging and uplifting experience. Expectations for the role include:

- A positive attitude and a sincere interest in people
- A professional appearance
- An understanding of Finnish-American history and culture, or a willingness to learn the basics
- A willingness to work independently, and as part of a team

Took some NPS seasonal and intern staff on a historical tour of Keweenaw County yesterday. Cliff Mine (the blow downs were wild there), Eagle River, Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor, and points between. We discussed early mining technology, transportation, tourism, and heritage, while visiting a few Heritage Sites as well: Keweenaw County Historical Society, Fort Wilkins, and Delaware Mine.

Too bad I can never remember to take enough good pics of what we’re doing/seeing. 🤷🏼‍♂️
