As we come to the end of May, we want to again mention National Mobility Awareness Month and the importance of access to transportation for everyone in our community.

Our wheelchair accessible van, and the volunteer drivers who power it, make it possible for our MDI neighbors to get to their medical appointments without a fee. For many people and their families, it is an option that makes access to care truly possible.

May is Older Americans Month, and at Island Connections, older adults on MDI are at the heart of everything we do.

Every day, our volunteer-driven (literally!) network helps neighbors maintain their independence by providing free rides and support that connect them to healthcare appointments and groceries.

A ride may seem simple, but it can mean staying connected, staying healthy, and staying independent. We are proud to help make that possible through the kindness and dedication of volunteers who believe community care matters.

It may seem a little unusual that when neighbors and volunteers sign up with Island Connections, we ask about pet allergies and preferences, especially since our volunteers usually aren’t going into someone’s home. But some of our volunteers love bringing their dogs along for rides, and for many neighbors (as long as they’re self-proclaimed dog fans), that extra companionship is more than welcome.

Our scheduling system includes lots of details about individual needs and preferences so we can make the best possible matches between volunteer drivers and neighbors. And our FABULOUS Transportation Coordinator, Stephanie, works her magic behind the scenes every day to help make those connections happen.

Island Connections’ mission is independence and connection for the MDI community, and sometimes, to borrow a line from the Peanuts comic strip, “Happiness is a warm puppy.” ❤️

MAY is National Mobility Awareness Month; promoting independence, accessibility, and mobility for seniors, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

Since this awareness campaign highlights accessible transportation, we want to thank all of our volunteer drivers!! Not only do they take neighbors to medical appointments and grocery shopping in their own vehicles, but Island Connections provides the only free wheelchair accessible van service on MDI and surrounding islands.

We are averaging 80-90 ride requests per week, and we always NEED more volunteer drivers. Summer can be especially challenging as many of our current volunteers have seasonal job commitments at this time. Please consider signing up as a volunteer, you can drive as little or as much as you would like. Not sure who needs to hear this, but: your car is already “the right kind.” We often hear, “I’d love to help, but my car is too old… too small… too low… too high…” and the truth is, that’s exactly why we need you.

Our neighbors have a wide range of mobility needs. Some prefer a lower car that’s easy to step into. Others need a higher seat so they don’t have to bend down. There’s no one-size-fits-all vehicle, and that’s where our volunteers make all the difference. The best part? Our ride scheduling system includes details about each neighbor’s needs, so you can choose rides that are a great match for both you and your vehicle.

This isn’t about having a perfect car. It’s about showing up.
