The Bangor Maine Fire Department held a solemn ceremony this morning marking the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the United States. A separate ceremony was held at Bangor International Airport and another on the Waterfront involving the Bangor High School Army JROTC and Bangor Parks and Recreation.

Fire Department personnel gathered at Central Fire Station on Main Street. In one of the accompanying photos, Fire Chief Eric Pelletier, in white dress shirt, gives remarks during the ceremony, with Mayor Susan Hawes, Police Chief Mark Hathaway and Fire Chaplain William Leighton next to him.

Other photos show Chief Hathaway as he provided his own remarks, and the Fire Department Color Guard, which rang the bell that's outside the station. Comprising the Color Guard are firefighters Courtney Brochu, Cam Aucoin and Andrew Mannett; Fire Lt. Alex Layman; and retired Fire Capt. Troy Lare. Joining them was Bangor Police Officer Keith Larby, who's a member of the Bangor Maine Police Department Color Guard.

Do you have old pesticides in your garage or basement that you've been meaning to unload?

Registration is now available for residents, homeowners and family-owned farms wishing to safely dispose of pesticides.

The free disposal is part of the annual Obsolete Pesticide Collection Program organized by the Maine Board of Pesticides Control and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. One of the statewide collection sites is in Bangor.

Registration must be done by Oct. 5, 2026, and the actual disposal of pesticides will occur in early November.

The City of Bangor is a member of the AARP Age-Friendly Communities Network. Age-friendly or livable communities have features such as walkable streets, housing and transportation options, access to key services, and opportunities for residents to participate in community activities.

The Bangor Livable Communities Committee is working to ensure Bangor is an active place where residents of all ages can live, work and play. The committee is scheduled to meet this Friday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m. in the Paul Bunyan Room at City Hall, 73 Harlow St., and the public is encouraged to attend to provide feedback on how the committee can work to achieve these aims.

The 25th anniversary of 9/11 is this Friday and the City of Bangor will hold three separate morning events to commemorate that day. One event will be held at Bangor International Airport, another will be held at the Central Fire Station on Main Street and a third at the Waterfront. The public is welcome to join with City staff in remembering those who lost their lives that day.

please remember that this lengthy project is scheduled to begin next week! If you regularly drive Cumberland Street or Harlow Street (and surrounding streets) please be mindful of road closures that are planned. Have alternate routes mapped out to minimize travel delays. Thank you for your understanding as this important infrastructure project gets underway.

A major infrastructure project along Cumberland Street is scheduled to soon begin and will require the closure of Cumberland and, for a shorter period, Harlow Street, too.

The City’s Engineering Department in conjunction with the Bangor Water District will launch the $2.8 million project in early September to replace sewer, lay new storm drain and new water pipe. The complete reconstruction of Cumberland, including pavement and sidewalks, is part of the project.

The project is scheduled to begin by Sept. 8 and for those initial three to five weeks Harlow Street at the intersection with Cumberland will be closed. Motorists on Harlow traveling toward Downtown will be rerouted onto Kenduskeag Avenue, while drivers leaving Downtown will be redirected onto streets like Center and Spring.

The subsequent closing of Cumberland will last into early December.

The work to separate sewer and storm drains is part of the City’s ongoing consent decree commitment with the federal Environmental Protection Agency regarding combined sewer overflows.

Paving crews are scheduled to be in two Bangor neighborhoods on Friday, Sept. 4, for some road work that will require no parking on the streets where the work is being done.

Workers will be off Ohio Street near Summit Park and the Standpipe paving along Fremont Street, Smith Street and Smith Street Avenue. Paving is also scheduled for Blue Hill East and Blue Hill West near the Downeast School.

Motorists are asked to please take it slow and keep the safety of workers in mind if traveling in these areas.

City Hall will be closed Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

🚌 Community Connector buses will NOT be operating on Labor Day.
🗑️ Trash collection will be delayed by one day all week.
