LifeFlight of Maine

LifeFlight of Maine We are a nonprofit committed to ensuring that everyone, in every community in Maine, has access to critical care and medical transport when needed.
(1)

LifeFlight of Maine aircraft, which include three helicopters and one airplane, bring lifesaving equipment and critical care nurses and paramedics to emergency scenes and small, rural hospitals throughout the state. Once stabilized, patients are then transported to one of Maine’s three trauma centers, or the nearest appropriately equipped hospital that is capable of caring for the patient’s indivi

dual needs. LifeFlight’s helicopters, based at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, and the Sanford Seacoast Regional Airport, cover the entire state of Maine and offshore islands. In addition, LifeFlight operates a King Air turbo-prop plane that can transport patients to specialists as far away as North Carolina, Ohio and Toronto. LifeFlight complements and supports the work of local physicians, mid-level providers, nurses and local emergency medical services (EMS) in caring for the critically ill and injured. All of our aircraft are staffed by teams of highly qualified critical care transport nurses and paramedics. There are typically three ways to request LifeFlight's services:

1. Emergency and specialty physicians can call for LifeFlight whenever they believe a patient needs a critical response, including specialty care, state-of-the-art medical equipment and rapid transport from a community hospital to a medical center with trauma capabilities.

2. Local EMS personnel, guided by supervising emergency physicians and Maine EMS protocols, can call for a helicopter to come directly to an accident scene when the patient needs special care and rapid transport to a trauma center.

3. Community physicians can also call LifeFlight to transport a critically ill or injured patient from a remote location, such as an island or peninsula, to a major medical center. LifeFlight of Maine uses the strictest medical utilization criteria in the country to make sure every flight is medically necessary. Use of LifeFlight is a physician-prescribed critical medical service, organized and managed in the same way hospital emergency departments and physicians provide care to all of the people of Maine. When care is provided, the patient and the patient’s insurance company are billed for the service. Just as Maine’s hospitals provide service to all patients in need of care, LifeFlight services are also provided regardless of a patient’s financial resources or ability to pay. LifeFlight is Maine’s only emergency medical helicopter service and is licensed as a scene response air ambulance allowing a full range of transport services for both interhospital and direct scene support of ground EMS providers. When inclement weather prevents LifeFlight from flying, our highly skilled flight crews are still in action, often headed to community hospitals or accident scenes via ground ambulances provided by Capital Ambulance in Bangor and United Ambulance in Lewiston. LifeFlight is fully accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems.

“When you’re given a second chance at life, you kind of have a different mindset, and my mindset now is full of gratitude."
~Shawn Rogers, LifeFlight of Maine Patient

For Shawn Rogers, October 14, 2012, started like any other Sunday. The 24-year-old was doing work around the house in Rochester, New Hampshire, including carrying a recliner up a flight of steps. He slipped and fell about six feet, diving headfirst onto concrete. That’s all he remembers — until he woke up in a hospital in a different state. He was lying in bed at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Shawn soon learned local EMS and firefighters responded to his home in Rochester immediately after his fall. Frisbie EMS intubated Shawn, and he was transported by ambulance to Sky Haven Airport in Rochester, where he was met by a LifeFlight of Maine crew and helicopter.

Fourteen years later, he reconnected with the flight paramedic who transported him.

Flight Paramedic Grows Relationship Between LifeFlight and the Maine Army National Guard 🩺 🚁

Greg Milliken still recalls the first time he considered becoming a flight paramedic. He was taking an EMT class at a municipal airport in Marshfield, Massachusetts when he saw a medical helicopter land at the airport to refuel.

“I remember looking out the window and saying to myself, ‘that is something I would really love to do in the future,’” shared Greg.

After years of training and hard work, Greg is now a flight paramedic and clinical educator at LifeFlight of Maine and a Platoon Sergeant and Senior Medical Instructor at the Maine National Guard. He is using his connections with both organizations to help create a stronger bond between the two where clinicians can learn from one another.

"My big picture goal is to create a training program that is a model for the rest of the Army to use to try to bridge the gap between the training they provide to medics and then building confidence on the job," said Greg.
