Bangor Quarry Hoist

Bangor Quarry Hoist It was built just a few blocks away in Bangor, PA, by the S. Flory Mfg. Co.

Using no taxpayer money, this volunteer project restored a 125 year old steam powered slate quarry hoist and constructed a timber frame pavilion with a slate roof to house it.

11 AM dedication

The Slate Belt Heritage Center (adjacent to the Hoist) will be open from 12 - 3. They will serve light snacks, have special displays of Flory Manufacturing material, and a continuous slideshow that highlights the life of the Hoist from the quarry to its new home. Extra parking will be available in the lot north of the building next to the Heritage Center.

The first five fence panels were installed today by volunteers from Serene Scene Landscaping and more fence panels will go up next week. The pavilion will look great for the dedication.

The past two weeks saw a lot of activity on and off site. The board and batten siding under the monitor was installed, completing the last pieces of woodwork on the pavilion. P. H. Barron Welding in Easton, PA, the oldest welding fabrication business in The United States, made angle iron brackets for the fence. Other volunteers attached the brackets to the fence posts and primed them.

Over the Spring and Summer, we can expect continued progress at the Bangor Quarry Hoist. Some projects, such as the completion of the roof and fence, will be especially visible, but others will require a closer look. For example, the brand new oil cups currently in production. Originally made of brass and missing from the Hoist for decades, the new oil cups are being 3D printed from plastic by a volunteer. From a safe viewing distance, they look just like typical oil cups found on Flory Hoists.
