After sleeping outside or in shelters for many years, David has lived in his apartment at Preble Street's Huston Commons for just over three years. “Before I lived here, I never had an apartment longer than like six months or maybe a year,” he says.

Since moving into Huston Commons, David has been working with his caseworker, Anne, towards his goals, including fixing his vision, getting an updated ID, and returning to work. He also recently reconnected with his brother after five years.

Two of our shelves are running low at the same time, personal care and the kitchen.

These aren't extras. A razor and fresh clothes are often what stands between someone and a job interview. A full pantry means our kitchen coordinator isn't rationing dinner.

Here's exactly what we need right now:

Personal care
Hair conditioner, Razors, Shaving cream, Body lotion, Foot/body powder, Air freshener, Sunblock, Tampons, Men's underwear, sizes S and M (new, in package)

Kitchen
Non-perishable food: canned vegetables, soup, pasta, rice, cereal, peanut butter, canned protein

Drop-offs can be made at 263 Maine St in Bangor.

We'd love to see you at the Downtown Bangor Summer Sidewalk Art Festival. A talented crafter, Cathy Fogler produces hand-knit animal toys and hand-sewn appliquéd tote bags, with all proceeds raised going to support the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.

What's been happening at the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter?
Our Diversion Coordinator used her exceptional problem solving skills and prevented 5 people from becoming unhoused.
Our Housing Manager used her extensive expertise to house a guest living in our shelter at Fresh Start Sober Living another shelter guest into transitional housing and a third shelter guest into an apartment. Our Housing Manager is also working with multiple people living in our shelter who have received housing vouchers to find apartments.

The University of Maine Steiners are preforming a concert a the The Church of Universal Fellowship in Orono (82 Main St.) on Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. Music with a Mission divides the door proceeds in thirds -- a third for the performers (the Steiners), a third to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, and a third for the music program of the church. The suggested donation at the door is $15.

Flying like shooting stars! The Steiners are shooting across the state of Maine on our annual spring tour. This year, we’re headed north to the great Maple Leaf in the sky (the sky.. being the country above us).

Before we head far up north, we’d love for you to catch us at one of our local night stops!

Some important information can be found at the bottom of the flyer about our show at the Church Of Universal Fellowship on the 20th. Our set will be a part of their “Music with a Mission” concert series! Entry is by donation, with a suggested donation being $15 per person. The proceeds of this concert will benefit the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter, The Maine Steiners, and CUF’s wonderful music program.

We served 41,371 meals in our shelter between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. We have a zero-dollar food budget. Meaning all the food for meals and the food pantry is donated not purchased.
How is that possible? Good Shepherd Food Bank supplies our shelter with a pallet of canned and shelf-stable food every month. Most of that food is given out at our twice a week food pantry. Good Shepherd runs a program called Fresh Rescue where local grocery stores are matched with local food pantries. The grocery stores pull fresh meat, bread, produce, and dairy from their shelves when it's nearing its best buy date. We dispose of any food that's past its best by date or expired. The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter receives food from the Main Street Shaw's Supermarket and the Union Street Hannaford Supermarkets 4 days a week. We rely on Fresh Rescue for meals we serve in our shelter and to give out fresh food at our twice a week food pantry.
There are many generous people and churches cook and donate meals for our guests - some people have cooked meals for our shelter guests for decades ❤ We have a wonderful team of people who volunteer in our kitchen - many have volunteered here for many years ❤ Many places of worship, local businesses, and kind people in the community organize food drives for our shelter ❤

We received our biggest food donation this weekend.
Thank you everyone who supported the Stamp Out Hunger food drive!

Every year since 1993, the National Association of Letter Carriers and the Heart of Maine United Way organize the Stamp Out Hunger in our area. The Bangor Area Homeless Shelter is one of the food pantries that receives food.
Between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025, 2,585 individuals and 1,320 families came to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter's food pantry.
Thank you Good Shepherd Food Bank, Stamp Out Hunger, and all the many generous people in the Bangor area who donate to our shelter.
