Ever looked up at the intersection of South Broadway and Shakespeare and spotted the faded, block-lettered “VOTE AGAINST PROHIBITION”? That’s a ghost sign, and Bromo is helping keep their stories alive.

Ghost signs are hand-painted advertisements from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Across Baltimore, they offer a glimpse into the city’s commercial past, remnants of brands and movements that once filled these streets with energy.

Many of these signs were created during the Depression era by a handful of companies: Globe, Park, Cheverly, Pritchett, and Morgan, primarily as bold advertisements. Today, they’ve become time capsules, slowly disappearing into the fabric of the city.

In partnership with Baltimore Heritage, Downtown Partnership of Baltimore, and a dedicated artist team, Bromo is working to respectfully rehabilitate these historic signs, preserving their character while bringing renewed visibility so they can be appreciated for decades to come.

Thank you to our project partners:
Muralists: Sam and Tyler from Human Made Signs & Murals
Ghost Sign Documenters: photographer Lashelle Bynum who's captured Baltimore's fading signs for over 20 years; and artist Greg Gannon who specializes in painted signs

Great events don't happen without great partners.

In the days leading up to the Spring 2026 Bromo Art Walk, Downtown Partnership of Baltimore deployed the team throughout our neighborhood — power-washing, greening, and cleaning shared spaces so that every visitor, artist, and venue could experience the district at its best.

The art gets the spotlight, but none of it shines the same without a clean, green, beautiful district behind it. We see you, we appreciate you, and Baltimore is better because of you. Thank you!

This is Bromo.

Not just a place on the map — a living, breathing, creative community where curiosity leads you down the block, through a gallery door, and straight into a conversation you didn't expect.

The Bromo Art Walk is how we say, "come see what's here." Artists, makers, neighbors, and first-timers — all welcome. This is where creativity meets community.

Catch us twice a year.

Mark your calendar. September 10!

Bring someone new.

That's a wrap on the Spring 2026 Bromo Art Walk!

Earlier this month, the district came ALIVE. 30+ venues. 100+ artists. One unforgettable evening in Downtown Baltimore — and you showed up for ALL of it.

From open galleries and live performances to mobile art studios, upcoming show previews, synth-punk energy at the After Party, and everything in between — this is what community looks like. This is what Baltimore looks like.

We're endlessly grateful to the artists, venues, volunteers, and neighbors who make this district what it is. The Bromo Art Walk creates accessible moments to connect with art and creatives, and nights like Thursday remind us exactly why we do this work.

Meet Bromo artist 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐲 𝐖𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐉𝐫. — a visual artist whose portraiture explores power, legacy, and the enduring impact of creative devotion.

His newest portrait series, 7 Stars across 2 Skies, is on view now through June at the Lord Baltimore Hotel as part of the In Good Taste Artist Series.

Born from a residency at Art Space Vidigal in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and completed at the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower, the collection envisions creatives from his community as sovereign, celestial forces — powerful beings fully in command of their own universes. His signature terra cotta noses and multicolored metallic leaf infuse each portrait with warmth and radiance, grounding celestial themes in earthly form.

Mark draws inspiration from artists who dedicated their entire lives to their craft. "I am inspired by dead artists," he shared — admiring the discipline of figures like Warhol and Picasso.

For Mark, art is a marathon: showing up, creating continuously, and contributing to culture over a lifetime.

When he's in the district, Mark says the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower () holds a special place: "They consistently create events to highlight the work of artists in the community. I feel seen as a member of this community."

He's also moved by the public murals of Pablo Machioli — especially the towering portrait on Eutaw Street near Lexington Market that has become a landmark for Baltimoreans.

Tomorrow night, we're inviting you into one of Baltimore's most iconic landmarks.

The Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower was built in 1911 by the founder of the Emerson Drug Company, Isaac Emerson, and modeled after the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, Italy. At 15 stories tall, it was once the tallest building in Baltimore.

The tower's giant blue Bromo Seltzer bottle — once a glowing beacon over the city skyline — made it instantly recognizable for decades. Today, it stands as a hub for working artists and one of our most beloved cultural landmarks.

On Thursday night, the tower opens its doors for a full evening of art, history, and culture during the Bromo Art Walk. Explore working artist studios, catch live performances, and experience Unapologetically Baltimore: An Artscape Retrospective, a stunning look back at Baltimore's creative legacy.

And if you've never been up to the Clock Room — tonight is your night. Take a guided tour through the historic clock room and Glass Company Museum, and get up close with the magnificent mechanism that has kept time over Baltimore for more than a century.
