Bromo Art Walk is back at MCHC tomorrow, September 10! Browse a maker’s market in the Meyerhoff Courtyard featuring local artists and artisans, and explore a special pop-up exhibition from Tulip’s Promise showcasing artwork created by local refugee children. Market vendors include The Groovy Vandal, Boba Studios, 3D Pen Party, Bonnie Crawford Ceramics, and Marie Machin Photography.

Bromo Art Walk multi-block, multi-sensory night on the town showcases the Bromo Arts District strict in all its glory: open galleries, live performances, imaginative projects, and in-person engagement. MCHC will be open with free admission for Bromo Art Walk from 5pm to 8pm.

In June 1894, Congress passed an act recognizing the first Monday in September as Labor Day, an annual celebration of the achievements of American workers. Born out of the growth of trade unions and labor movements in the late 1800s, the holiday also commemorates those who advocated for fair wages, safer working conditions, and reasonable hours for all.

"Stitched in Favor: 200 Years of The Historic St. James Episcopal Church" closes on September 13. Plan your next visit to the Maryland Center for History and Culture to explore the church’s unwavering commitment to faith, education, and social justice. By chronicling the church’s journey from its founding in 1824 to its enduring legacy today, the exhibition explores the rich history of this cornerstone of African American heritage in Baltimore through historic and contemporary textiles, art, and artifacts.

"Stitched in Favor" was created with historian Rebecca Hackett and the community at The Historic St. James Episcopal Church, Lafayette Square.

Support for this exhibition was generously provided by the Lilly Endowment, in partnership with the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies.

In August 1776, a group of soldiers—known as the Maryland 400—helped hold back the British Army at the Battle of Brooklyn, allowing the rest of the Americans to escape the field. The Marylanders lost a quarter of their men that day, but their stand saved the Continental Army, allowing it to live and fight another day.

On Thursday, September 3, join Owen Lourie, research archivist at the Maryland State Archives and author of the upcoming book "Finding the Maryland 400," as he shares the story of these soldiers at the Maryland Center for History and Culture.

From studio visits to museums, Dr. Leslie King Hammond, a maverick art world troublemaker, opens doors for artists of color with humor and wisdom.

The documentary film "A Life in Art: Through the Eye of Dr. Leslie King Hammond" is a portrait of a renowned art historian, teacher, curator, and artist. On Thursday, September 17, join filmmakers Ben Baker-Lee and Rassaan Hammond for a free screening at the Maryland Center for History and Culture. Following the screening, the filmmakers will be joined by several artists featured in the film for a panel discussion and audience Q&A.
