On this occasion, July 15, 2026, we visited the grave of Vincent Fitzpatrick to remember and honor his memory and legacy on this the anniversary of his passing.

He was a giant in the study of Mencken and his passing left a void in the world of Mencken that may never be filled.

He was also the curator of the H.L. Mencken Room at the Pratt Library for many years.

Rest in peace Vince. You are remembered and greatly missed.

Happy Father’s Day Mencken Fans! Americans first celebrated Father's Day on June 19, 1910. However, it was not signed into permanent federal law until 1972. President Coolidge supported the concept of a national celebration in 1924, and Congress passed a joint resolution recognizing the day in 1956. The first presidential proclamation designating the day was issued by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966… a decade after Henry’s death. Despite Henry being childless, history includes many accounts of him sharing, dare we say fun moments with children. A sense of pride and wisdom and mentorship around young impressionable untainted innocent minds. Henry lost his dad at age 18 and his life changed forever in that moment.
